Country music from Warner
on 29 September 2014
Of the three remaining major record labels, the vast majority of the country music recorded in the 20th century is now owned by either Sony or Universal. The labels that are now part of the Warner group tended not to be interested in country music until the eighties or later.Of course, the Warner group is stronger in some other music categories. but this compilation (on their in-house oldies reissue label Rhino) is still packed with great music despite being mostly limited to the seventies and eighties.
The Kenny Rogers tracks are 1990 re-recordings but very well done. The rest are all original recordings. The Willie Nelson tracks are from his Atlantic recordings of the early seventies. I was surprised to find Olivia Newton John here, but I now know that her early seventies recordings are owned by Warner. There are plenty of other familiar names here including Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis and Glen Campbell to name a few.
There is one omission that I can only put down to an oversight by the compiler -Stella Parton had a UK top 40 pop hit in 1977. Very few of the other artists had a UK hit at all, so it should have been included. Still, the rest of the music here is of such a quality that I feel it would be unfair to knock a star off for that.
This is a fantastic compilation despite Stella's absence. I hope it does well because that might encourage the UK branches of Rhino and Warner to show more interest in country music.
Please note that the Amazon.com reviews listed at the bottom of the page are for a different compilation. One of them mentions 100 tracks; there are just 60 here.
