Nice side story with a different point of view. Hello Trouble!
on 4 September 2015
This is a short novella bridging the gap between books in the long running Kris Longknife sci-fi space opera series. This is set between book nine and ten so if you haven't read these first, I recommend you do as this is an ongoing series and will mean nothing to you otherwise.
1 - Kris Longknife: Mutineer
2 - Kris Longknife: Deserter
3 - Kris Longknife: Defiant
4 - Kris Longknife: Resolute
5 - Kris Longknife: Audacious
6 - Kris Longknife: Intrepid
7 - Kris Longknife: Undaunted
8 - Kris Longknife: Redoubtable
9 - Kris Longknife: Daring
This is the second short novella I have read in the Kris Longknife series (The first being Training Daze) and while the first was mildly entertaining I don't feel like it added all that much really. Welcome Home / Go Away however is a far superior experience. This short story doesn't really feature all that much of Kris but instead is about one of her grandfathers General Terrance "Trouble" Tordon. It runs slighlty parallel to the end of Daring with Kris having returned to human space and Trouble being rather worried about how she is and what happened to the fleet but having a lot of politics involved.
It's a good little read and I really liked General Trouble getting a bit of attention and it fits in really nicely with both events in Daring as well as leading up to events in Furious perfectly. If you're a fan of the series then this is actually a novella worth giving a shot to.
+ Doesn't focus on Kris, fleshes the cast out slightly.
+ General Tordon is a pretty interesting perspective and character.
+ Fits in perfectly with events/future events.
