The best lens wipes I have used - recommended without hesitation
on 31 August 2017
I wear glasses for driving and have done since college days (40 years ago), and more recently I now need glasses also for working on my laptop. I also have a cheap £1 pair of +1 reading classes I keep handy for very fine print. I also wear polycarbonate safety glasses at work, and they get pretty dirty each day.
I have tried a variety of moist wipes (from £-shops, LidL/Aldi, and online) , sprays and microfiber cloth combinations.
Just recently I decided to try these Zeiss wipes, and so far they are the best I have found.
For my work safety glasses, I rinse them under the tap with a bit of liquid soap to actually clean them and remove particles and oil etc to avoid scratching the lenses as I clean them, but then I finish them off with one of these wipes.
For my other glasses I simply use one of these wipes directly.
So far, they seem noticeably more moist than other brands that I have tried, and that is a good thing. They are a good size. They leave my glasses (which have various photo-sensitive and anti-glare, anti-scratch coatings) clean and streak/smear-free first time.
I have also used them to clean my mobile phone screen, and my laptop screen - my particular laptop has a hard glass-like screen surface. They do a good job there also.
The packets are quite small (5cm x 5cm) but all the packets are in pairs, with a perforated line between the two packets to make separating them straightforward (so each pair is 5cm x 10cm). A handful of these certainly take up less space in my laptop bag than a spray bottle and microfiber cloth (and do not need to be removed for airport security checks, unlike my spray-bottle of liquid-cleaner)
There is an indicated "open here" tear line on each packet. I am 60+ years old and have arthritis in my wrists and thumbs which affect my manual dexterity. But I find the packets easy to open, and I have not yet damaged any wipes in doing so.
The only "unknown" to me is the shelf-life of the wipes. A box of 200 should last me quite a while, and I don't yet know if the wipes will dry out somewhat with time. Some other brands that I have tried were quite a bit drier to start with, or did noticeably dry out inside the packs with time - reaching the point where they were too dry to use, or with one brand they were completely dry.
There is what seems to be a manufacturing date on each packet - but no indication anywhere that I can find regarding a suggested shelf-life ( I am not suggesting that there should be a formal "best-before" date or "expiry" date - although I did once buy a plastic/metal foot file that DID display an expiry date on the packet).
I might contact Zeiss Customer Service and enquire about that - if I get a reply I will add it to this review.
EDIT: 1 Sep 2017, I heard back from Zeiss already. They do not have a fixed shelf-life, but they would expect them to be useable for at least 2-3 years.
I have also spotted in one of the customer Q&A here, someone says he has used them after 5 years and they have still been moist.
