TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICEon 23 May 2015
Emily continues to plot the destruction of the powerful Graysons. When she was a little girl they framed her beloved father, he jailed as a terrorist and dying in disgrace.

Welcome here 22 more episodes of mind-boggling twists and turns, everybody with secret agendas, no guarantee all will survive.

As ever, critics can easily have a great time ridiculing storylines so flimsily contrived, loopholes abundant, unconvincing characters suddenly brought in to boost things up a bit. Such detractors are missing the point. "Revenge" is deliberately a glossy outrageous offering in the tradition of "Dallas", "Dynasty" and "The Colbys", viewers invited to sit back and enjoy every absurdity. (At least nobody here has taken off in a flying saucer, as happened in "The Colbys".)

The cast is having a fine time - as revealed in a bonus where the five main male actors sit round a table looking back on the season.

Will evil Conrad and Victoria at last get their comeuppance, Emily be truly satisfied?

Seemingly not, as there is to be a Season 4.

This may worry some dedicated fans. The ingredients were all here for a superb end to the series, just minor adjustments needed to make it so. Let this not be one of those shows which does not know when best to end, but simply drags on with diminishing returns.

Season 3 contains great moments - the wedding, and event-crammed finale included. Sadly there are also too many easy ways out of various situations, too many creaking contrivances. Surely, for example, it is time to call a halt to so many dads, mums, brothers, sisters, sons, former lovers turning up out of the blue?

It will be interesting to see what Season 4 has to offer.

On one level this is all a load of escapist nonsense, with a crazy plot full of mind-blowing twists and turns that are almost impossible to keep up with: not something to take very seriously. BUT, and there are a lot of 'buts', we found that once hooked by the first series, there was a lot to keep us glued. For a start, however daft the plot, it has always kept us wanting to know what it going to happen next.

Perhaps even more importantly, with one or two exceptions, the cast is superb, not only the lead roles but also the many characters who feature for a while and then get replaced. Together they form an ensemble that seems to be having huge fun working together and represents an interestingly diverse range of colourful, highly memorable personalities. Our main exception was the infuriatingly pert Margoux. Would Jack really have fallen for such an obvious, self-satisfied phoney?

But who can complain when we are also treated to such a unique character as the wonderful Nolan Ross, such a complex heroine as Emily Thorne, and such vitriolic fireworks as those between the serpent Victoria and her many enemies, including the deliciously evil Conrad?

As for the production values: the sets, the clothes, the big set-pieces such as the bombing, they are all first rate. As a painter, I have much enjoyed the range of contemporary art that is on display and though I am not usually at all interested in designer clothes I find myself fascinated by the way in which the truly astonishing wardrobes reflect the many characters, as do their interestingly varied homes and offices. A DVD special feature that I would really enjoy would be a final fashion show in which we get to see all those outfits paraded so we can fully appreciate their richness and diversity.
