An interesting insight into the musical genius of the frontman to one of the best rock bands of the last 3 decade
on 24 January 2017
It's hard to look past this band as anything other than Chino Moreno's side project, and that's what it is. The other members are all now doubt talented musicians in their own right, but Chino is the big draw, the box office name most people would've heard of. This project has also gained much more attention than his previous 'Team Sleep' endeavour as well for some reason.
The songs are great, opener 'This is a Trick,' is 80's synth for the 21st Century and crucially grabs the listener's attention from the git go, Bitches Brew' is a haunting melodic epic with a traditional 'Around The Fur'-era Deftones heavy outro and is very guitar driven as 'Thhlyghost' is in parts too.
Somewhat conversely, 'Trophy' is totally stripped back and very mellow, to the point it'd fit on any genre 'chillout' album you can imagine. Whilst obviously not a completely polar opposite of Deftones, it does give you an insight of the attributes and elements of that great bands' sound that Chino brings to the party; namely a distinctly 80's 'New Wave/Romantic' vibe, odd synth sounds, unique melodies and 'less flashy than Stef Carpenter' but driving rhythm guitars.
Some tracks are fairly forgettable towards the end of the album which takes away one star.
