Rued Langgaard is often written off as a a bit of an oddball - and he certainly wrote some unusual works, such as Sfaerernes Musik (Music of the Spheres), which do not fit neatly into normal categories. Those more familiar with his reputation than his music may be dis-inclined to explore this album, especially if they are wary of 'chamber music'. 'Rosengaardsspil', the opening work of this album should quickly dispell any wariness; it has all the charm and tunefulness which one associates with Dvorak, calling to mind the latter's nostalgic Cypresses. 'Rosengaardsspil' played so understandingly by the Nightingale Quartet, should encourage even the most doubtful listener to persevere through the rest of the album, via the Quartet No 2 to No 4 'Summer Days' another delightful excursion into sun-dappled nostalgia. There's nothing to frighten the horses in this music!
