This is a superb cd that catches the style of this music perfectly. There is Viennese charm aplenty as well as outstanding virtuosity from Jack Liebeck and Ms. Apekisheva. This disc is equal to that of Itzhak Perlman and the great Fritz Kreisler himself.
The recording is superb, the notes are exemplary and the disc is almost 70 minutes long!
Krielser playing as good as this reminds us what a marvellous composer Kreisler was. The great Rachmaninov clearly thought so transcribing the ever lovely Liebesleid and Liebesfreud for piano. Violinist Liebeck's playing fresh and personal, superbly captured by the Hyperion engineers. He treats Kreisler's music with serious respect, and that shows in the scrupulous attention to dynamics and detail in these accounts. There is some spectacular violin playing in the bravura pieces, and lyrical, and soulfulness in Mélodie and Schön Rosmarin for example: never grandstanding and playing to the gallery.
I've enjoyed this disc very much - definitely a highlight so far in 2014.
(Watch out for a new recording of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy coming out in October).
