I have owned Nymans own recordings of much of this music, this version shows the music in a new light with a much more romantic touch. Played with this pianists impeccable musicality it should be appreciated for what it is ( a disc of film music) and it has a great deal to enjoy.

This is a very generously filled disc of Nyman's pieces for piano which have their origins as music for film. Music from the Jane Campion film The Piano, perhaps understandably dominates and it is these pieces which are perhaps the most successful. They were originally written for this instrument, of course, and Valentina Lisitsa brings out the sentimentality and expression in these pieces well. Similar beauty is to be found in extracts from The Diary of Anne Frank and Wonderland. Less successful are the arrangements of earlier Nyman film scores such as Time Lapse from Zed and Two Noughts and Chasing Sheep from Draughtsman's Contract. These were originally performed rather excellently by The Michael Nyman Band and I feel they lose some of the quirky textures and humour in these piano versions. Nyman himself has recorded many of these pieces on his Piano Sings series. Whilst I'm sure he would concede that Valentina Lisitsa is the superior pianist perhaps that isn't really the point. He brings an aggression and vivacity to the more driven of the works that underpin their origins in English experimentalism. (This is particularly evident when you see him perform them in concert). Ultimately it's a choice between romantic expressionism or the less subtle but exciting rawness of Nyman himself. Thankfully there is room on the shelf and listening time in our lives for both!

A mixture of quite evocative tuneful music, essentially non-classical but nevertheless a big step up from modern pop/rock.
The CD is well recorded with a very believable piano sound on a high end hi-fi system.

I think Nyman's simple but deep music represents the interacting principles of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang - the positive and negative, male and female, sun and moon, softness and toughness - cosmic dual forces which pianism of Lisitsa covers and realises the most. Her dynamics and perspective of piano expression contributes enough to persuade us to feel the Yin and Yang. I cound find quite new features from Nyman's music. All thanks to Lisitsa. LIsitsa, Thank you very much indeed for the wonderful gift !!!

I'm a serious Lisitsa fan, and snap up anything she issues. This is the least impressive thing I've bought. The music is pleasant but mostly slight, and reveals all it has to offer after a couple of hearings. Technically she is cruising, a bit like a formula 1 car that doesn't get out of third gear. This is fine as far as it goes, but for me I wish there were a bit more substance and virtuosity.
