This is the long awaited sampler of Detroit music before the Motown Era. Great vocal groups, some early soul, and some rockabilly and country music. All recorded at the Fortune studio in Detroit and released on Fortune, Strate 8 and Hi-Q records in the fifties, and early sixties.

Don't expect anything that sounds as smooth as Motown here. The sound of the Fortune studio was primitive, and dirty.
No matter how angelic the voices of the vocal groups were,... The studio had only one microphone it seems, and the drums and guitars and saxes were always competing with the singers, resulting in a sound as recognisable as the sound of SUN records of Memphis, and just as hot.

I love this compilation, because it's a raunchy bunch of recordings, focussing on the so far less re-released artists on these labels.

Andre Williams is under-represented here. So are The Don Juans,The 5 Dollars,The Diablos and Joe Weaver and other blues artists on these labels. They have been the subject of previous re-releases. Most of these are still available. Get them together with this compilation, and you'll have an un-equalled collection of "primitive" and "dirty" sounding music, that must have been a source of inspiration for Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder and Bruce Springsteen

One of the greatest compilations of hillbilly and rockabilly ever put together.
Some of the artists i had'nt heard of,but really enjoyed every track.
The top tracks for me are from the tattooed lady album, but there are lots of good rockin' tracks.
Great to hear these tunes without the the clicks and skips from the dust of old records.

Another gem from One Day. Wwhat I like about these cds from One Day is that there is always the unknown artists that have managed to slip through my music net. At these prices you just cannot go wrong.

Unsophisticated, raw music here, incorporating boogie (see title of issue), early soul, r&r, cha-cha, doowop, a little country, and 2 risque comedy numbers. This is a great compilation, but if you like polished ,professional recordings, then I fear this is not for you. If, however, you like "straight- off- the-street" sounds (with a few dodgy vocals thrown in!), then I feel sure this would sit well in your collection.
Recommended.

A very good collection of oldies, which is good to reminisce with. Good value for money.
