The photo showing the drive 'standing up' on its shorter edge is misleading. Some Seagate drives do stand up that way, but not this one. It has a much bigger footprint - takes up a lot more space. More importantly, this drive is incompatibe with file writing software, which means its ok as a backup storage drive if you simply want to copy files on to it and nothing else, but it won't allow software such as DVD Shrink to write files and if you create the files using another drive and then copy them over, some software and some other devices (e.g. DVD Player) will not be able to read them. Be warned... most external Seagate drives have the same problems. There is one satisfactory Seagate external drive that I can vouch for: it's branded Seagate 2TB GoFlex Desk - comes in a blue and black retail box with an (accurate) illustration of the drive working in the 'standing up' position. But the Seagate 'BackUp Plus' range of drives and the Seagate 'Expansion' range of drives all have the same problems. Good luck finding a Seagate 'GoFlex Desk' by the way. Nobody seems to have them in stock. In case you're wondering what the crucial difference might be that makes the GoFlex so satisfactory and all Seagate's other drives so very UNsatisfactory... I don't know. And Seagate tech support - which is not the best - either can't say or won't say or they don't know.
After trying three Seagate drives (one 3TB, two 2TB) recently and getting nowhere, I've given up and bought a 2TB from Western Digital instead. (WD 'Elements'). Immediately visible better build quality and, yes, it works perfectly.
