A perfect short story!
on 21 February 2014
I'm a Casey Watson fan and have enjoyed most of her books so I was looking forward to this being released. Scarlett's Secret is a Short story about Casey's time working as a Youth Centre Team leader. This is long before she became a Foster Care and indeed before she worked in the "Unit" at a Secondary school that she mentions in some of her books.
The two main characters are Jade and Scarlett, twin sisters with a dark past. They attend the workshops that Casey is running for young people not in education or work. They do Adult literacy courses, numeracy and team building exercises so that hopefully they can go out in to the world and find their 'place'. Jade has an unpleasant problem and Scarlett open up to Casey about the root course of it. As is mentioned early on in the book is how child behaviour is like an Iceberg. The part you see is the bit sticking above the water whilst the remaining bit under the water is the root cause of the problems. It's that that you need to get to the bottom of.
The story has a positive ending where you feel optimistic about the girls future. Casey's books are so easy to read and despite the subject matters often being quite heavy going she manages to bring a lightness in her story telling so that you don't get dragged down by the darkness of it all.
If you like Cathy Glass books and even Toni Maquire then you will enjoy Casey Watson's books. I look forward to her next release.
