Not much Pink Martini but a fine Von Trapps album!
on 6 March 2014
In many ways this is a typical Pink Martini album. It is beautifully arranged and produced with interesting songs in lots of languages. Amanda, August, Melanie and Sofia Von Trapps offer an interesting contrast to usual vocalists China Forbes, Storm Large and Timothy Nishimoto.
There is no Pink Martini presence on the two acapella tracks although band leader Thomas M Lauderdale does appear on all but one of the others. Upright bass player Phil Baker and drummer Anthony Jones each appear on about half the tracks.but otherwise appearances by Pink Martini band members are thin on the ground. A more honest description of the album would be 'The Von Trapps, Thomas Lauderdale and friends'.
Having said this the Von Trapps sing beautiful vocal harmonies on a series of songs that probably most merit the description of 'sweet'.If you like your Pink Martini with lots of up tempo Latin tracks you will be very disappointed. The best advice I can give is listen to the samples from the album before buying. If you enjoy exploring the multitude of musical directions followed by Pink Martini in recent albums this could well be to your taste. From an Abba song in Swedish to a Francoise Hardy song in French I found much to enjoy.
