I wanted a DVD playing program. Power DVD is better (more controllable fast/slow speeds) than Windows Media Player although not as good as WinDVD. Also needed to capture video from my MiniDV camcorder via USB2. Power Director will do this (easy and no loss of quality) even though the manual says it needs a firewire (which my new computer does not have). If you want to capture from MiniDV I suggest downloading a trial version of Media Suite/Power Director and checking that it works with your camcorder before purchase. Media Suite includes these 2 programs and is cheaper than buying them separately. However Power Director is too gimmicky to get full marks. Try converting to DVD and adding menus and you get gimmicky music and effects by default. Easier to/more obvious how to turn these gimmicks off than with Coral (which will also capture MiniDV via USB2). Not obvious how to start the capture - it is the little red button on the left - not any of the menu/batch capture buttons that look more obvious (but wrong) choices. Fault on Power Director meant persistent error message every time I tried to capture/edit ('something' not installed). Irritating having to click 'install' (and type my administrator password every time) however there is a free upgrade patch to cure this. Got notification about this upgrade soon after registering Media Suite. Patch works. Does the job. Pity about the gimmicky music and effects which stop it getting full marks.
