Disappointing if you like the 'Holy Bandits/Shouting' era
on 25 February 2014
I've got pretty much all their albums, after really getting into the Oyster's after the 'Shouting end of life' album. By the time 'Deep dark Ocean' was released they seemed to have lost their raw energy, and entered a more melodic phase. This has continued on, getting even more laid back by the 'Meet you there' album. With the release of 'Ragged Kingdom' with June Tabor I really felt the Oysters had got back on track, however 'Diamonds' just falls back into the mold of Meet you there. There is nothing here that gets me tapping along, or singing away, to me it just confirms that the Oysters are getting older. Yes there are a couple of tracks which I like such as 'A River Runs' but none that hark back to the good old days.
I guess the wriitng was on the wall when Ray 'Chopper' Cooper left. I'll be going to see them live in a few days, and I just hope that we get some tracks from the Holy Bandits/Shouting era that will get the crowd dancing, otherwise I think we could be in for a 'quiet' night.!
