There's not much to say about "Ms 45" really, if you like gritty 70's/80's exploitation movies then you'll probably dig this.

The late Zoe Tamalis plays Thana, a mute girl living in New York. On her way back from work one day she is dragged in an alley and raped, also she is attacked and raped again later on in her apartment..she will not take this lying down and becomes...MS 45!

Thana goes on a killing spree, focusing on men who are up to no good, sleazy photographers, adulterers, gang members, they are all fair game!

Directed by Abel Ferrara (Driller Killer,Bad Lieutenant etc) this has the same gritty grimy grindhouse low budget feel as his early films like Driller Killer, though this is more professionally shot and directed this time. There is some debate if this is inspired by the swedish rape revenge pictute called "Thriller - A Cruel picture" where the girl in that movie who goes out for revenge is also mute, the story is different but i'm sure Ferrara latched onto a unique idea and crafted his own movie using that.

The DVD is a korean release with removable korean subs, also the box wrongly states the picture is 4.3 full frame when it is actually 185 widescreen non anamorphic.

Zoe Tamerlis Lund plays Thana, a mute seamstress who is raped on her way home from work. Then, after arriving at home in shock she is confronted by a burglar who rapes her again. Striking out in rage and terror Thana kills her attacker. After disposing of the corpse she keeps his gun and as her mental state deteriorates she uses it in a bloody killing spree on the men of the city.

Director Abel Ferrara started his film-making career with Driller killer, a film that took the low rent punk aesthetic of New yorks underground film scene, mixed it with the sleazy low rent charms of the 42nd street grindhouse and topped it off with an intelligent tale of a tortured artist going mad in an environment where his work is not appreciated. With Ms.45 he delivers a film that continues with the punk, exploitation style of Driller but instead crafts a tale of urban isolation and violence. Thana has no voice, an isolated lonely victim she becomes a hunter through necessity. While most revenge films of the time take a cathartic approach to violence, Ms.45 seems to view it as an act of total self destruction.

Sadly Alamo Drafthouses Blu-ray is locked region A. A real shame as the film has NEVER looked better. If this is the standard for their future releases they are a label to watch. While not overloaded with extras it has two short films with Zoe lund and some interviews as well as an excellently produced 32 page book with essays on the film. Anyone not in love with the sleeve art should also be made aware that it is reversible and has the original art on the reverse. Personally I like both options equally.

Overall, if you can play region A discs then this is one I highly recommend picking up. Drafthouse are releasing THE VISITOR, which is on its way to me as I type this and i'm definitely looking forward to it.

Cracking Abel Ferrara flick, starring Zoe Tamerlis/Lund (who would go on to write the script for Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant (1993)). She plays a mute fashion worker who is raped twice in one day and then begins shooting would-be rapists (and any other men who cross her path at the wrong time) on sight. The mute lead character and grimy backstreets of New York add to the feeling of urban paranoia, and Tamerlis does a superb job of bringing across her character using facial motions and body language. It's not clever but it is well done.

On the disc, this Korean import has the English language track and subs that can be turned off. The picture is very crisp and clear. Going from memory of the VHS copy of Angel of Vengeance (which was briefly accidentally released uncut) there are a couple of really minor trims to the film - the rape 'performed' by director Ferrara on Thana is a couple of seconds shorter - but really there's nothing significant missing.

Cant believe I never saw this until this year. A great revenge film, with a great performance by Zoe Lund (rip). An early film by abel ferarra, been really getting into his films more as of late, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Fully uncut on this bluray release.

A Top of the pops Exploitation/Grindhouse classic.

Mute girl goes on killing spree after being raped twice in one night.

Abe Ferara directs.

Print is peachy - New York looks great.

It's cut - sadly.

You'll need to get the French DVD which goes for a good bit more or revert to the VHS to avoid that.

Whatever route you go ...

REVIEWED VERSION: 2014 Cinedigm US Blu-Ray (Region A)

Director: Abel Ferrara

Cast: Zoë Tamerlis, Albert Sinkys, Darlene Stuto, Helen McGara, Nike Zachmanoglou, Peter Yellen, Abel Ferrara

Production: US 1981

Mute seamstress Thana (Zoë Tamerlis) is raped twice on her way home from work. The second rapist waits for her in her New York apartment, threatening her with the titular .45 Magnum pistol. She manages to kill him with an iron while he rapes her.
Armed with his 45 Magnum she embarks on bloody a one-woman crusade of vengeance against the Big Apple's male population.

1981's MS. 45 (aka ANGEL OF VENGEANCE) is one of the best vigilante movies made, hands down.
It is a grindhouse production and was made on a budget of only $62,000. It's also an exploitation film, so expect a focus on the ooey gooey good stuff - enough for the BBFC to impose almost 1:42 mins. of cuts for the 1984 theatrical and 1986 VHS release (there hasn't been a release in the UK ever since). Former US releases were cut by 1:22 mins. to obtain the R rating from the MPAA. This cut version was also released on the 2000 Image Entertainment DVD. Older US VHS and the German Warner Bros. VHS as well as this Blu-Ray version feature the fully uncut, unrated version of the film.
As long as you expect a grindhouse film and not 100 % realism, you won't be disappointed. Some of the gore effects look fake by today's standards (blood dripping on the newspapers clearly looking like red paint in an early scene) and Thana shooting the gun like a pro with an endless amount of ammunition might cause some eye rolling, but take it as what it is - a highly entertaining and satisfying revenge flick.
Abel Ferrara (BAD LIEUTENANT, KING OF NEW YORK, DRILLER KILLER) - one of my favorite directors before he turned mainstream in the mid/late 90s - delivers his masterpiece with this revenge/vigilante film, giving fans of the genre what they really want without any moral preaching - thank you!
What makes MS. 45 so great is Zoë Tamerlis's (R.I.P) mesmerizing performance as Thana: playing a mute, she cannot use words to describe what she thinks or how she feels, her mimic, her eyes have to tell the whole story and she does it perfectly in a very convincing performance that not just anybody could deliver. Also the psychological aspect is brought to the screen very well, something that most rape and revenge movies just simply lack. Thana suffers from her first kill and actually throws up in the toilet, she is not just a mindless killing machine. There is a missed opportunity here, as this is not fully extended, but it is still further than many movies of this genre go at all and should be appreciated.
The rest of the cast is OK, nothing special here. Some over-acting by Editta Sherman who plays the landlady and watch out for a cameo of director Abel Ferrara as the first rapist. Albert Sinkys as Thana's boss, Albert gives a decent performance.
Ms. 45 was shot by James Momel, who was the cinematographer of another Ferrara films, the excellent FEAR CITY as well as MANIAC COP 1 & 2. I like his style, especially the dark shots of nighttime New York.
Written by Nicholas St. John, who also wrote Ferrara's movies DRILLER KILLER, FEAR CITY, CHINA GIRL, KING OF NEW YORK, BODY SNATCHERS, SNAKE EYES, THE ADDICTION and THE FUNERAL. A brilliant script here, as it does not only focus on the revenge part.
My only complaint is the horrible porn movie soundtrack by Joe Delia - OUCH! I guess it suits the grindhouse theme, but OUCH!
Next to DEATH WISH 2 and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2 I consider MS. 45 to be one of my favorite vigilante movies and definitely in my Top 5 films of all times. A definite must-have for fans of the revenge/vigilante genre. MS. 45 also has one of the best and most memorable finales ever seen in movie history, taking place at a Halloween party. Catholicism, a reoccurring theme of Ferrara's plays a vital role here. Just perfect!
Sadly this Blu-Ray is region locked. There also is a region 2 alternative on DVD: the 2008 French DVD titled "L'Ange de la Vengeance" Ange de la vengeance (L') is uncut with English audio and optional French subtitles. The Korean region free DVD Ms. 45 (1981) aka Angel of Vengeance ( IMPORT plays UK Region 2 ) with Zoë Lund & Albert Sinkys, despite other claims - is the CUT R rated version, I checked it personally.

- Zoë Tamerlis's film debut

- Zoë Tamerlis described how minimal the script was, which is uncharacteristic of Ferrara's later films

- the name Thana is reminiscent of the Greek god of death "Thanatos"

- is regarded a cult film among feminists

- Zoë Tamerlis (later Zoë Lund) died April 16, 1999 at age 37 of drug-related lung and heart failure

- Zoë Tamerlis's salary for MS. 45 was $1.500

- Zoë Tamerlis had a minor role in Abel Ferrara's 1992 film BAD LIEUTENANT

Feature running time: 80:52 mins. (uncut)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
BBFC Rating: 18 (after 1:42 mins. of cuts)
Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1
Audio: English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono 2.0
Subtitles: English HoH
Extras: Interview with director Abel Ferrara (7:45), Interview with composer Joe Delia (10:06), Interview with creative consultant Jack MacIntyre (10:32), "Zoe XO" Featurette (6:23),"Zoe Rising" Featurette (6:01), Theatrical Trailer (1:18), Other Trailers, Digital Copy, 31 page booklet, reversible cover art sleeve
Region: A (locked)

Picture quality: 4/5
Audio quality: 3/5
Extras: 4/5

This Blu-Ray version of the film restores the alibi cuts imposed on the movie by the dreadful MPAA (including the rather harmless shot in the leg, which was notably cut in the R rated prints), making this the first uncut print available in the US since its Unrated VHS release.
The picture quality is pretty average, but given the age of the film and the fact that this was a low-budget grindhouse production, I'm giving it a 4 out of 5. It certainly is an upgrade from the DVD
The audio is presented in the original monosoundtrack - English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono 2.0. It is the only audio track on this Blu-Ray.
Considering the age of the film and the low budget, it is amazing how many extras they came up with.

As an exploitation "classic", I did not find this as interesting as other movies in the genre.("The Exterminator" for example).
The plot is your standard rape/revenge outing, and Mr Ferrara, although he has directed other interesting movies, did not direct this with any degree of aplomb im my opinion.
This is a bit of a plodding affair. After the monobrowed heroine is assaulted twice in one night she goes on a rampage of revenge against various scuzzy characters, and eventually males in general at a Halloween party.
The problem is, is that the kills are not well staged or very interesting. The overall effect on me, was that it was a bit repetitive and boring.
Added to that, we have some crummy acting from subsidiary characters. The landlady for example, is painful to watch.
Also featured is absolutely the most shocking music you will ever hear at a party. That there was anyone left there to gun down is a mystery.
This film was just an OK timewaster im my opinion.

The DVD plays in all regions it's 80mins more than any other version abailible so was worth the price and is a dark, atmospheric well directed film. The leading role of the vigilante killer is VERY easy on the eyes, a stunning girl!
