The Tyburn Tree is not for me
on 27 June 2014
I love the darkness, the sinister, flamboyance, pathos and the kitch. I love the stories of Old London, but most of all I love Marc Almond. Marc&London, a match made in heaven, or hell as some might prefer, but to me The Tyburn Tree is a mismatch made in, just, a studio. I don't like the noises, the silly cockney voices, the jazzy progrock influences, the awful , wrong side of the seventies, guitarsolos. I don't like the lyrics. The brothels, the gloom, the murder, the hangings, the darker side of life, everything has been illustrated in a much more affecting way by Marc in the past. Cannot recall a single melody right now. Ok, not quite true "London bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down..."
Well, I really did try.. maybe the Tree had to grow on me. I promised myself that I had to listen to the album at least 10 times before I was going to make my disappointment official. I didn't made it up to that number. I'd prefered to listen to Variety, which is in it's own way much darker, gloomier and more london than that pretentious Tree.
