Nothing better to lift one out of letargy or sadness. The sound is sublime and the enthusiasm of the players always communicative. It is dangerous music - one does not want anything less having tasted this.
I heard some of L'arpeggiata's music on Radio 3 and liked it enormously. They bring such passion and freshness to baroque music, as well as their musicianship. This collection of 6 of their albums represents great value for money - the only slight downside is lack of notes (eg words to the songs).
At the time of writing, each individual disc still retails at full price and so the box represents something of a bargain. The discography here is varied, ranging from early opera to the kind of folk/jazz/early music fusion which L'Arpeggiata have helped define and develop.
If you've caught snippets of the ensemble's output on the radio then you'll be familiar with the infectiously foot-tapping effect of some of the music. Beyond that though, the material is historically informed without being in any way stylistically confined.
An at times fascinating and immensely rewarding document of the group's early years.
Bought after hearing one track on Saturday morning radio. I've downloaded it onto my computer so I can listen to it lots! I've also lent all 6 cd's to a friend. A lovely collection of varied classical, ensemble, instrumental and pieces for voice. Brilliant.
