The "Beginnings" series strikes again with another spectacular collection of original recordings that in this case inspired or influenced The Beatles. This is the sixth of an extremely ambitious 6-CD series on The Beatles' influences and inspirations. As with others in the series (2 Rolling Stones collections and one each on The Who and The Kinks), the accompanying booklet has extremely thorough and welcome annotation. I applaud whomever performed the extensive research that resulted in these fascinating choices. I hope they're planning discs on The Yardbirds, The Animals and Jimi Hendrix as well.
Their other series, "How Britain Got the Blues", is every bit as good (if not better, as each set of this 4-part series is a 2-CD extravaganza of great cuts). Bravo to History of RnB Records for these releases and the outstanding music scholarship that accompanies them.
Of course this is not the Beatles but a selection of the stuff that they would have been listening to as they honed their craft! It is the music that lots of fans too would have been hearing on either "Pick of the Pops" or on Radio Luxemburg, possibly unaware of changes to come! These are great songs in their own right letting the listener hear the very influences that eventually impacted on a whole generation of (Beatle) music lovers. Enjoy it for what it is!
