With the release of this boxed set of 8 of Yusef Lateef 'Eight Classic Albums' you get a lot of music for a little money.

Yusef Abdul Lateef was born William Emanuel Huddleston on the 9th October1920.
In 1950 he converted to the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam in 1950.
He died on 23rd December 2013.

But, at the time of writing, Amazon Have no track listings.

These 8 classic Albums are issued on 4 CDs with 2 albums on each.

Often the CDs fail to note which album is on them.

The Real Gone Label release 100s of this type of collection at 'cheap as chips' prices.

There is minimal information and I have often found that it is only on the first CD of the set that actually lists the tracks as they play.

BUT the label really put all their efforts into remastering the sound and, let's face it, most fair people would agree that is what counts in the end?

The 4 Cds are housed in a double wide jewel case. and that is about it.

The albums are

"Jazz Mood (1957)",
"The Dreamer (1959)",
"Before Dawn : The Music Of Yusef Lateef (1957)",
"The Fabric Of Jazz (1959)", "Cry Tender (1959)",

Easily one of the best of the Real Gone Jazz Box Set re-issues, (dare i say, THE best?). Every album here is full of quality, especially 'Jazz Moods' and 'Eastern Sounds' which are two of my favourite all-time Jazz albums anyway. The re-mastering here is excellent quality, clear and warm throughout, unlike some other Real Gone re-issues (eg - the Modern Jazz Quartet) which have sadly not fared so well.

For those who don't know Yusef, this is a great place to start. These albums capture so much of what he does best: combining heartfelt, soulful Jazz with a unique exotic hybrid that blends eastern mystery with a raw earth energy percolating underneath. His music is fragrant and fertile, echoing elements of say Charles Mingus, Roland Kirk, Sun Ra even but he is absolutely his own man. Where some 'experimental' Jazz can be overbearing or become plain lost, Yusef delivers, maintaining that essential warmth and soul feel, even when the compositions and instrumentation push the boundaries.

Highly recommended.

(ps - If you like this, try also the Chico Hamilton and Jimmy Guiffre box sets - both fine selections of intelligent Soul Jazz with an interesting edge)
