I agree reading this Koban series in order is a good idea. So much so I am re-reading before starting on Book 4. I love the world Koban and the animals and descriptions. Okay, some consider it long-winded in places. On a re-read I find I am far more interested in Koban, the Kobani and the animals of Koban and the other worlds than the Krall rampaging around. One needs Book 1 and Book 2 for full understanding of just why the Krall act as they do, not that anybody would approve of them SPOILER ALERT - the rescue and aid the Kobani give to the remaining races the Krall did their best to obliterate is, in my opinion, absolute genius on Mr Bennett's part. Of course the humans are doing their best not to join the obliterated Krall conquests. One of my favourites.

One needs to read from beginning of this series of books, to fully appreciate 'Rise of the Kobani', but it is not necessary to do so,as the storyline ' goes back ' to include necessary reference from previous books in series.
As with the other books in this series some are slow to begin with , but story line strengthens very quickly and one becomes 'glued' to the story. I am looking forward to next release in series, which i believe is due out soon.
For those into sci-if books, this is a very well written series of books and the author is to be congratulated on his creation of characters and presentation of a very strong story line.
