The first thing to say is that my UK version of this CD includes a fine cover of Santa looks a lot like Daddy (a cover of a song co-written and first recorded by Buck Owens), but that song is omitted from the USA track listing; I don't know if that's because it's not on the USA version, or because it's a listing error.
The duck mentioned in the album's title is actually one of men in the Robertson family doing an impersonation. (Shame that - I wonder if they attempted to record live ducks?) He quacks a lot in the title track, a cover of the traditional Deck the halls. Other than that, the duck is barely noticeable.
The remainder of the album features several members of the family as lead singers, which others provide vocal support. Maybe the drew inspiration from the Skaggs family, who have followed a similar idea with their Christmas albums, though the style is different. To add further variety, the Robertson family added further guests, with George Strait duetting with Phil on a cover of George's own Christmas cookies, Alison Krauss joining Sadie on Away in a manager, Luke Bryan duetting with Willie on Hairy Christmas and Josh Turner duetting with Missy on Why I love Christmas.
As for the songs, it's a long time since I heard anybody sing You're a mean one Mr Grinch, while Ragin' cajun redneck Christmas, Hairy Christmas, Camouflage and Christmas lights and Why I love Christmas are original songs, while The night fefore Christmas is an original poetic narration. There are some nice covers of I'll be home for Christmas, Baby it's cold outside, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Silent night for those who like at least some famous classics to be included.
Picking favorites is difficult, but first impressions are that Ragin' cajun redneck Christmas and Hairy Christmas are the best original songs, while Missy's cover of I'll be home for Christmas is impressive. I also particularly like Santa looks a lot like Daddy.
There's a lot of great music, and a lovely family picture showing 23 family members in the booklet. Unfortunately, the booklet does not put names to faces so anybody who feels the need to do that will have to look elsewhere. But that's a minor point as this is a fantastic country Christmas album that was clearly fun to record, and which I find most enjoyable to listen to.
This is the best ever christmas album ever i have brought, love the people of duck dynasty and this is just another bonus, this will make you laugh and just brilliant how they put this fantastic album together highly recommend.x
I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband who I bought the cd for. He loved it and thought it was very funny and the songs were catchy and he was impressed that the Duck Commander guys could sing so well. I bought it as a jokey, novelty Christmas gift which totally backfired as it was subsequently played a lot over the Christmas period!
