The Baebes are beginning to get a bit stale. There are a few nice new songs on this but it is "filled" with material that sounds as if it could have come from their previous albums. C+ could try harder!
If you know the Baebes, you'll know what to expect of this album - haunting female vocals with period musical support, giving distinctive interpretations of some traditional carols. The selection here is largely mainstream rather than obscurely medieval (for that, you want their earlier album "Mistletoe and Wine" or, better for the purists, something by the Anonymous 4 or Hilliard Ensemble), but the arrangements manage a nice balance between the simple and naively sweet and some subtle but intriguing gothic twists, which will surprise no-one who remembers founder member Katharine Blake's earlier work with Miranda Sex Garden. Changing just one or two notes in the melody to change the key from major to minor or introduce an element of dissonance gives some of these tunes an eerie or even slightly sinister edge, but nothing too looming. This is an atmospheric and actually rather easier listen than some of the Baebes' work - just right for the dark winter nights.
Well not really. We are just more familiar with this material. As a long term fan of the Baebes music, I feel this CD had to be made. That is many of us will have grown up with most of these carols at Christmas and it might therefore be considered that the Baebes are straying from their roots into more popularist territory. Indeed, it does have a wider appeal and even my daughter has bought a copy and loves it. However, the Baebes have added their unique mediaeval twist and come up with another sublime aural experience.
Some of the tracks we have heard before but they do have a Christmas theme and are therefore not out place in this album. There is plenty of new material to not make followers who buy this CD feel short-changed. So if you like the Medieval Baebes music I don't think that you will be disappointed and if you are new to their music this is as a good an introduction to it as you are likely to get.
This is probably the best Christmas album for a long time. Some nice new renditions of songs from the Baebes previous albums and great new material. Listened to this in the car quite a lot leading up to Christmas
Really beautiful traditional carols. Atmospheric and harmonious as the mediaeval baebes always are. We loved relaxing with this cd over Christmas, and singing along with a brandy on Christmas Eve. Thankyou
This is a really lovely CD, there's the odd duplicate from Mistletoe and Wine but otherwise there are some beautiful renditions of traditional carols. Perfect for listening to any time around Christmas, especially on a quiet, chilly evening in front of the fire!
This CD is Another Example of the Talent The Mediaevil Baebes Have in Abundance. The Only Thing Better Than This CD is To See Them Live as I did at St James's Piccadily To Perfoorm This CD. Better Than Any Gimics On TV Talent Shows
