Seen Stanhope twice now in the UK, and the last, but sadly unreleased, tour was utterly brilliant. So it's great to have even just the very brief snippets of the same material here, and this latest finds him in savagely original and absolutely scintillating form.
Stanhope takes Bill Hicks' 'Little Dark Poet' persona into frenzied, uncharted and screamingly funny territory, and with such intelligence and honesty that I've no doubt Hicks himself would rate him as the best comic alive right now. He's the only one who make me gut-laugh out loud til it hurts, whilst he tears down the consensus and, equally, demolishes the painful delusions and comfortable assumptions of 'liberalism.'
He makes more sense than just about anybody I know. Hence 'mainstream' media reviews often drip with a barely concealed combination of hostility and envy, as they realise Stanhope simply has the guts to say what they never will.
And how he does it after near 25 years of 'combat drinking' and every drug known is beyond me. But he does and I can't recommend this highly enough.
If you've not yet been thrown into Stanhope's lake of fire, maybe you should work up to it and get FROM ACROSS THE STREET and NO REFUNDS first, both of which are also classics.
Btw, get the album / DVD of PUTSCH, not the mp3s, as you do NOT want to miss the FAREWELL MOTHER track.
For those of you who are familiar with Mr. Stanhope already then you know the score.
This is probably not his most politically cutting or socially on point. If you're looking for the 'latter-day Bill Hicks' incarnation of Stanhope, this isn't it.
What this is is an irreverent, hard-living and self-destructively honest comedian at his self-critical best. Dealing with subjects and situations that other comics would be terrified to even touch upon, Stanhope clearly LIVES what he preaches for better or worse. He's not afraid to turn back views he's espoused before and he's openly self-destructive but he starts digging and doesn't stop and the results are nothing short of inspiring.
This is a comedian working for one sole purpose; to be funny. He's experienced things wholeheartedly that most of us never will (and thank god for that) and he's done it with his entire heart and soul and translates that to the stage.
It goes without saying, if you're easily offended? He's so very not right for you that it's barely worth saying at all. But if you have an open mind and want to hear what one of the very best comedians (still) alive today can do when he's in the groove and totally on form? Then I cannot recommend this material highly enough.
Urgent, funny, bitter, angry and above all original, I was worried that Stanhope was going to slowly decline but he seems to have hit a new period of even stronger material. Well worth a look, in fact I cannot recommend a comedian more.
After a couple of patchy releases Stanhope is back with "Beer Hall Putsch" and it's up there with "Deadbeat Hero" - Instant classic.
Doug sounds like he is enjoying himself here & I can't wait for the DVD as I have only heard the CD and not watched it on Netflix.
Only disappointment is the Allison Pearson routine he performed on his last UK tour didn't make the cut. A shame as it was both heartfelt and hilarious and would have made complete sense alongside "Farewell Mother".
This is Stanhope at his best for me, heard no end of his gigs, seen him a few times over here too. Way to progressive for mass media drivel, don't know what else i can say, apart from this should be mandatory listening for all people wishing to participate in any progressive civilisation
