All good so far
on 19 May 2014
Took this out for a bike ride last weekend, attached it to the top of my vented road cycle helmet using the velcro straps provided which gave a nice tight firm fixing despite the knobbly nature of the helmet (no flat surfaces for the sticky pad so didn't use it). The camera may have looked a little odd perched on top of my helmet but if you can get past that it works very well, the thin profile means the wind doesn't catch it, it only adds a small amount of weight so doesn't cause the helmet to wobble. I tried the handlebar mount but it seemed too prone to jitters from the road surface, needs some experimenting to see if it can be used successfully.
The main thing I wanted to put in this review is my success in using a SanDisk 64GB Ultra Micro SDXC 1 card (class 10), the camera reports 554 minutes recording time on full HD and highest bit rate! The battery will not last long enough to record this much in one sitting, but it does mean that you can charge the battery between outings and not have to delete files to continue recording if you're on holiday or something, or (if you can find a genuine one - had a look but it seems there are a lot of used or fake ones on the market) buy a second battery as it takes a typical Nokia mobile phone rechargeable battery pack.
The remote control worked well, I was able to feed the strap of one of my cycling gloves through the slots so it was easy to reach, a more permanent strap should be my next acquisition (there wasn't a strap for the remote in the package) or maybe I'll just keep it in a rear jersey pocket.
With the camera on my helmet it was easy to reach up to turn it on it makes a splash sound so I know it has come on, then when I press record on the remote it makes a beep so I know it is recording.
Footage seems impressive, smooth frame rate and decent enough light / dark adjustment when moving from sunny to shaded areas and back. Raw footage may look better once the colours have been tweaked, this has always been the case with camcorders unless they do some processing on-cam to warm the colours up or whatever, I think I'd rather have the capture raw / neutral so that I can process it myself, which I'll no doubt want to do anyway to add a music track and make it look funky - cycling isn't the most inspiring sport when it comes to sound!
As other reviewers have noted, there is an audible hiss when there isn't much audio for the camera to pick up, I plan to experiment with an external mic to see if this problem can be avoided. When cycling there is plenty of wind noise anyway so not usually a problem, though the wind was not as loud as I was expecting; I might try adding some sort of dead kitten faux fur to the mic area to see what effect that has.
The waterproof case looks very sturdy, have not tried it in water yet. There is some audio recording through the case, mainly louder sounds as you might imagine, but not totally silent by any means, kind of like when you're wearing ear defenders.
No real plans to use the car windscreen suction mount, it is a nice inclusion for those who might want it though, may even be useful for other things as all of the accessories have a standard camera screw mounting.
