TOP 500 REVIEWERon 26 May 2015
This was an early outing for the now famous Benedict Cumberbatch. I enjoyed it on TV at the time and enjoyed it just as much some years later on this DVD. A strong production with all the elements of great drama, despite knowing the storyline. Hawking's tale is well known and this us a thoughtful and compelling depiction of his life and loves. Never mawkish, but certainly heartbreaking in so many ways. Whilst Hawking's illness is devastating, the effect on those close to him is equally profound. I enjoyed this enormously.

A brilliant depiction of Prof Hawking's contribution to cosmology and his personal battles in the process. It concentrates on his developing theories and understanding of the universe so does not duplicate the more personal emphasis of Redmaine's more recent portrayal. A viewer should have both. I loved it when it went out on TV

I bought this to see Benedict Cumberbatch at work.
Blown away by his protrayal of Stephen Hawking!
Anyone who loves great performances & cosmology - buy it :-)

Just watched this film again [recorded it from bbc4] saw it first time a few years ago absolutely brilliant, Benedict Cumberbatch is a first class actor, a very touching account of the early career of Stephen Hawkins and the tragic onset of his debilitating m.n.r. A wonderful insight of this brilliant man.

Have been interested in SH since 1980+/-. Am inspired and encouraged by people's heroic struggles against the odds and this is really one of those. Enjoyed the 'fictional' private life that was depicted, and loved the scientific parts. For someone who does not know that much, this film neatly sorted out precisely what SH accomplished when it came to the 'static universe' debate. As for the scenes depicting the two Nobel Prize winners who discovered the residual hiss of the big bang, this movie was worth watching for that alone. And of course am a big Cummberbatch fan, and enjoyed his performance just as much as I always do. I wish there'd been more, but what was there was really worth it, and is a movie that will be watched again.

So while there's all the buzz about the Theory of Everything, no-one's mentioned that Cumberbatch had given a portrayal of Hawking at university and the time of his diagnosis in this quiet, understated film from the BBC for which he was Bafta nominated. Great British supporting cast with well-known faces, Well worth watching.
