Architecture In Helsinki do not come from Finland. They are an Australian ensemble who are described as having "cult" status in their homeland. This, despite it being their fourth album, is my first encounter with the band and the experience has been an entirely pleasant one.
The prevailing mood of 'Moment Bends' is, on the whole, upbeat and light of spirit. Essentially what we hear here (here here!) is sparkling electronic pop; all catchy tunes, bouncy beats and pretty vocals. 'W.O.W.' is a wonderful example of the band's capacity to take a simple melodic idea and run with it. The harmonies are delightful; the pulsing rhythm addictive.
Other highlights would have to include : jolly singalong track 'Desert Island', which brought early Erasure to mind for more than a moment; the bouncy, bumptious and very danceable 'That Beep', which nods and winks blissfully back to its 80's forebears and the strangely soulful stripped-down beauty of final track 'B4 3D' (the album's loveliest invention).
Another recording to add to a sun-filled soundtrack for Summer 2011.
