From Norway comes yet another prog metal band. The point is these are actually good. The first 4 tracks lean heavily towards the Pagans Mind style of metal: soaring clean vocals, heavy guitar, drums and bass, with catchy melodies. The album then takes a different tack with Mr Miruz, a really cool sounding song that feels completely different than the previous tracks. This is followed by a tune that starts not unlike Joe Satriani`s Summer Song, although not an instrumental, the song has a great hook. Next up is the awesome The Paramount Of Lies, the longest track on the album. This starts with some Symphony X like orchestral sounds before going into some heavy riffage. The last 2 tracks go back to the Mr Miruz sound, which would appear to be their own sound, with no obvious influences to be heard. For a debut album this is a really great start. The songs do not go into overlong Dream Theater territory, which makes for an album that sounds clear and concise. Along with the release from Prospekt (The Colourless Sunrise), which in my opinion is one of the best metal albums of the year, the future is looking terrific for listeners of this kind of music. Also, like a breath of fresh air, both of these bands have a singer that can actually sing, no ridiculous growling or grunting to be heard anywhere. Don`t go without, get Withem.
