Given the importance of Le Grand Kallé to Congolese - and therefore all popular African music south of the Sahara - it's amazing that we've had to wait so long for a proper treatment of this artist. And that's exactly what these 2CDs, and in this package, do. They're informative, respectful and beautifully presented with quite the best liner notes (in English & French with many photos spread over 104 pages) that I've read. The tracks are arranged chronologically and cover pretty much his entire recording career. They include songs that had a continent dancing (Indépendance Cha Cha) to those that have never been released on CD or even vinyl before. If you have any interest in Africa and African music, not just academic but for the sheer joy of it, then this album is for you.
This is one for Collectors only!! The tracks are from 1959 to 1970, so the production values are fairly basic, however there are a few belters within. Nice Booklet with CD, lots of obscure info, as I said before, one for the Completist Collector.
