Redesigned by the suits (the higher-ups) at Jeep?
25 June 2018
I owned the previous version of this Jeep bag (in red) with two zip openings, rather than three. While at first glance the bags look very similar, I was surprised to discover how flimsy the laptop area is in this newer model. The old design came right up over my laptop (the inner wall "leaf" was taller). Mainly, though, the sleeve used to be padded on both the rear outward facing back wall and the inner leaf wall; not now. The new one more closely resembles the pocket in a tent (see: comparison photos below) and is no more robust than one of those tent pockets. It offers much less protection for your laptop. And gone is the Velcro strap.
The new design appears to be a cost saving measure for the company. And absolutely worth mentioning, the new bag is much smaller than the old model. I can easily put this newer bag inside the old bag and zip the old bag up around it. More savings on materials? Let me guess, for every 4 bags made now, Jeep can now produce a fifth at no additional material costs? The suits.
Make something well and charge a fair price. Don't cheapen your product, even if it means you cheapen the price… a bit. Jeep clearly care more about profit than their brand reputation. Like the food industry—their motto looks to be, release a good product and then over time cut corners and increase profit. I'll think twice about buying a Jeep bag again. This is what happens when the money-men or money-women get overly involved in product decisions.
P.S. This bag is dark green, in reality. In the marketing photos it looks teal. So probably don't let the nice marketing colours persuade you to buy. The colours appear more dull in reality.
