A reviewer on another Amazon site seemed to be more interested in Ms Wolfe's personality rather than her music. Yes, she did perform under a black veil due to extreme stage fright but what can we say about the music? Like many artists Pain is Beauty takes a more electronic direction creating gothic soundscapes against Wolfe's hypnotic vocals. The guitars are still there but accompanied by sample loops, synth, drums and effects. It is a very dark album that gives very little light relief. Wolf sticks a knife in your gut, gives it a twist, then just to make sure you are dead comes back for more. All this death and darkness does possibly make this album a track too long. Wolfe, however in not about creating disposable pop songs but expressive experimental alternative music. Pain is Beauty is a very apt title. So if you were to buy only two albums this year I'd recommend `Pain is Beauty' and Braids `Flourish // Perish' both have to be contenders for album of 2013. Both albums surpass in creativity and musical terms most commercial led stuff that is promoted by radio and music magazines.

...but listened to her on the latest Russian Circles album and thought I would listen to some of her own stuff and I like this CD although it is the only one of hers I have purchased.

There are some songs that I don't care for that much but there is some really nice tracks here that impress with good singing and instrumentation. For fans of her who haven't heard the song she sings for the Russian Circles album--I suggest you give that a listen. If Russian Circles ever had a singer I think she'd be a good fit.

I've really come to love this album. A blend of electronic sounds, acoustic & electric guitar that held together by her soaring reverb soaked voice. It's like the lovechild of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey decided to play with a drum machine...

Not a single weak track here. "They'll Clap When You're" gone has to be my favourite, but this record is much better experienced start to finish in full.

In 2011, on her Apokalypsis album, foremost goth-folkstress Chelsea Wolfe struck dramatic gold with "Pale on Pale". The rest of the album was, to this reviewer, more difficult to penetrate however and since then all we've been offered is a collection of dusty attic-core acoustics (Unknown Rooms). Hell be praised then that Pain Is Beauty is now here because it's packed with wonderfully atmospheric melancholy and Wolfe's blend of hushed folk, ominous melody and witchy coldwave has never been more consistent, striking nor appealing.
