These two 2-cd volumes are a fine way to trace the roots of what we now call `southern soul'...some delicious one-off obscurities appear on each set, nicely balancing out familiar items. Each set is accompanied by a fact and picture-packed 28-page booklet, annotated by John Ridley, complete with a breakdown by artist and label scans and reproduced posters that get us saddos wetting ourselves. I will guarantee that any listen will leave you far from bored... the two sets are highly complimentary, excellently presented and really should be sitting together on the record shelves. I'm not a big soul fan, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these tracks. Unpolished, raw southern soul that's very much on the blues side of things, with not a dud in the bunch! CD comes with a nice fat booklet and sound quality is very good on most of the tracks.
