This album is great for two reasons - firstly, I have always enjoyed Grappelli's music and interpretations. Secondly, and as a James Last fan, there is the opportunity to hear 'Hans' Last as bassist before his career really took off. Awarded for being 'Best Bass Player' three times in the early fifities, it is great to hear him backing such a fine jazz musician. Nice, easy listening jazz for a dinner party or just relaxing.
Stephane Grappelli Ensemble: May 17, 1957, NGR Studio, Hamburg
Moosicus Records N1303-2
A real collectors gem given that Stephane Grappelli did not record a great deal during the 1950s through to the mid 1960s when he began recording once again and making frequent appearances for a new audience. These recordings originally made for German radio are now available on CD. The whole production moves with great pace and has that vitality for which Stephane was always known. The is a good liner notes booklet too. Many standards are given the jazz violin treatment with personal favourites Jeepers Creepers; Lady be Good; I'll Remember April.
