The underrated Philadelphia-born trumpeter Ted Curson(1935-2012) recorded this quintet session for ATLANTIC on April 25 & 27, 1965 with tenor saxophonist Bill Barron, pianist Georges Arvanitas, bassist Herb Bushler and drummer Dick Berk. The six varied tracks feature five originals by Curson and one standard with the highlights including 'Ted's Tempo', the pianoless 'Reava's Waltz' and an impressive version of 'Star Eyes'. Curson once described his playing as "one foot in avant garde, one foot in mainstream" and the music on this CD is a balance of discipline and freedom. The exhilarating and adventurous jazz on 'The New Thing & The Blue Thing' deserves to be more widely known.
BTW ~ The eyes of a hawk are required to read Nat Hentoff's notes on the back of the CD.
