This album saw the return of Depeche Mode. And I mean, the real Mode. It's like they went away and reinvented themselves, only to discover their origins. This is their return to form, since Violator. They can be forgiven for the 'rock' era, as many of Martin's better works shone through without Dave being present for most of it. They survived, moreover Dave survived, and this is their apology, to my mind. The production is fantastic, the mixing exquisite. The lyrical dexterity of spirituality and love bounces nicely to the synthesized relics that Martin uses. This is my favorite post-Alan album. Next to this as it's equal, it must be Music for the Masses, each different but as good as each other. The slow and seductive Corrupt is balanced against the spiritual Little Soul; the gritty Wrong and bluesy Miles Away balance against In Sympathy and the passionate Comeback. And this is what we wanted, the real, good old Mode, coming back to us with their mix of electronica, blues, dark & light, spiritual & passion, grit, pain, blips, Plinks, twang, and complex lyricism. It brought peace of mind to me, and I'm sure it's success brought peace to them. From a devoted fan.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 March 2012
Depeche Mode's twelfth studio album has, as expected, top-notch production and sound quality. But the songs themselves feel like the group is just treading water.

Having said that, there are three tracks written by David Gahan (along with his production buddies Eigner and Phillpott) that tend to have a wilder freedom than the usual Depeche Mode, but I'm not sure they take the group in the right direction. Meanwhile Martin Gore continues to explore the subjects of kinky naivety and of the concept of belief, subjects made plain by song-titles such as `In Chains', `Little Soul', `Jezebel', and `Corrupt'.

I give four stars because I like all the tracks, save for Gahan's `Hole to Feed' (too raw for my liking) and `The Truth Is Miles Away' (ditto), and even Gore's `In Sympathy' tested this listener's patience with its mind-numbing repetitiveness.

But there are no five-star tracks here, and little that is distinctly memorable in this 2009 collection. More instrumentals would be nice, or at least longer songs with instrumental breaks.

In conclusion, reviewer Gareth Grundy writes for most when he says, "It's ... hard to shake the sensation of a band toiling to simply hold itself together, unable to do much more than edge forward."

Great new album from Depeche Mode which reminded me of some of there older stuff. Every song had my foot tapping away. The DVD of an interview with the group and the video for Wrong was a real incentive to buy this over the normal CD and I'm glad I did. Video for Wrong is very clever and quite intense. All in all a fantastic album from a fantastic group.
