So what is this? It is ostensibly 58 tracks that drove Elvis wild during his teenage years say 1948-52 or thereabouts. Ok we get a handful of well known blues eg Arthur Crudup, Rufus Thomas, Junior Parker and the Blue Flames and BB King. The rest however are pretty obscure to my ears and unless you really dig the blues you may well find this two cd set quite a hard listen. It also begs the question how do we know these tracks were driving the 15 year old Elvis wild? We do know he really rated Arthur Crudup and BB King but what about Billy Love, Sammie Lewis and Eddie Snow?? There only seems to be tracks from black blues artists on this set so clearly the white hillbilly music and white gospel of say Hank Snow and the Statesmen Quartet has not been included. I would have liked to hear Hank Snow's 'I'm Gonna Bid My Blues Goodbye for example. This isn't a bad set and certainly excellent value, however if you're not really into the blues it probably won't be your cup of tea. Nevertheless it warrants 4 stars.
