The film is nether accurate or simply plays fast with the truth. For instance,Sixsmith (coogan) is filmed meeting the dragon sister Hildegran. However she had died 6 years before he had started researching the book.In the film the two of them go off to America to discover her lost son.In actual fact only Sixsmith went and he went for a rather cursory few days and flew back, even though one of the main characters was due back in America he would not delay his flight.
In the book itself large tracts of the narrative are in fact invented by sixsmith. For instance both people had died before he started the book yet reading the book he gives us vast swathes of narratives between the two men, when in fact no-one else was around to hear the conversation...The book and film are both 50% fiction and 50% fact but both are couched as 100% true stories
