Love and betrayal are multi layered, like sweet Turkish filo pastry sweets. This story, however short, is flooded with textures and tastes: the haunting emotions of close relationships. And like baklava, one monent crunchy, one moment sweet, this story gently weaves between the joy of family life to the sadness. I love Lahiri's work and this is just another example of the mellifluousness of her prose. Enjoyable and heartbreaking at the same time.

J. Lahiri is one of my favourite authors and having read nearly all of her books, I of course wanted to read this one. This short story is a quick glimpse of her emotional prose, of her world of Bengali immigrants in USA. She invariably manages to endear me to her characters who struggle to adjust to their hybrid existence. This story is more superficial than her novels where she deepens and widens her detailed observations of human emotions. I recommend reading her longer books.

Another great read from Lahiri. Just enough depth to understand the workings of this family, but no unnecessary filler. Goosebumps at the ending. Could have been a really horrible finish, but was only disappointing instead...due to what happens, not the writing!

Buyer beware! This is a short story, NOT a book of 352 pages as stated above. The writing is very readable and engaging, hence an avid reader is through this in no time at all. It does make you want to read more by this author - I wish it had been a book!

I thought this was a series of different short stories but it's not. I suppose it is what it says on the cover if you read it carefully. Quite liked the book but I didn't think it value for money.
