I think that Director Ariel Vromen had real difficulty with this project which unfortunately didn't use the Philip Carlo book as its reference and because Kuklinskis story was so long, so much of it had to be ignored otherwise the film would have to have been at least 3 hours long. So much of Kuklinskis life was left out, the film had no real continuity. For example, how he was regularly and severely beaten by BOTH his parents as a child until he was old enough to commit patricide. The child Kuklinski, had no remorse or feelings about his crimes as a child, teen and youth most of which involved physical assaults on anyone who crossed him. He murdered people in so many different ways, by so many different methods, in so many varied locations and there was NO particular age group or ethnicity that were safe and because of THIS the Police NEVER tied the crimes down to one person. One of his favourite methods was to secure the chosen victim to a post deep in a cave then cut them in numerous places causing blood-flow. He then set-up a camera and left the scene returning days later to find only human bones that had been stripped of flesh by ravenous rats, ALL captured on film for whoever issued the contract to watch. Kuklinski was afraid of nothing and no-one but was neither suicidal or shrewd, spending much of the money he 'earned' on gambling. none of THIS was included in this film, or the mutual hatred he had for his mother-in-law. Kuklinski wasn't a braggard and so his tally of 100 plus 'victims' is almost certainly true. HE believed he would be poisoned in prison through a contract placed on him by the Crime Families.starring Michael Shannon, Wynona Ryder, David Schwimmer.

Biopic film about Richard Kuklinski, the man who became known as one of the most infamous contract killers the mafia ever used. Deemed "the Iceman" because of how he was freeze bodies to make time of death harder to determine if and when bodies were found, he is said to have murdered between 100 and 250 men.

The film chronicles the start of Kuklinski's notorious criminal career right up until he was caught in the mid 80's and imprisoned for 5 counts of murder. Unfortunately, the film misses out on a lot of important detail and doesn't explain a whole lot about his childhood and upbringing (which is an important part of his story and explains much of his later behaviour). The film draws on a lot of accounts from Kuklinski himself from various interviews he gave (which can be viewed in various online places as well as bought or read in books), but you get the sense that a lot of the 'facts' have been greatly exaggerated or fabricated altogether.

To be honest, the entire film seems rushed and hastily put together and is missing a lot of substance. Kuklinski's story (if it all IS true as he claimed it is) is compelling stuff, but only some of it (not ALL) was used here. The film is relatively short and poorly put together (one can't help there was a LOT left on the cutting room floor) and comes in at 105 minutes when a film of this calibre really needed a good 200 or more to really get you into the man's head and life.

Michael Shannon was half decent as Kuklinski, he sounded a little like him although he didn't quite have the same frightening presence; he did however nail that rather evil dead look that I saw for myself in Kuklinski's eyes in some of those video-taped interviews (this man was evil, no doubt about it).

This isn't the kind of movie you can watch again and again, so I give it a rating of three, and only for Shannon's performance.

Based on a true story the film is a no-nonsense drama set in the 60's
'Richard(Ricky)Kuklinski' seems from the outside to have it all, a nice
home, along with a loving family, on the face of it he's an ideal husband
and father.
his family has no idea of what 'Ricky' really does for a living, he is in
fact employed by a gangland boss to kill by order, something he does without
batting an eyelid.
after leaving a witness alive, 'Ricky' becomes unemployable, he's good at
what he does and try's to return to work forming a partnership.
not working has caused tension and frustration which begin to affect his home
however his return to work is causing problems for his ex-boss 'Roy Demeo'
which threatens to affect 'Ricky's' family.....
because He's crossed the line in the eyes of the Mob.
this is a hard-hitting no nonsense movie that is well worth a viewing,

Well acted, but sadly no backstory to explain why kuklinski become the person he was. Any film would find it difficult to show the horrors of some of his murders. However Michael Shannon does capture his total lack of emotion in his killings. I knew of this film but read the book by Philip Carlo first and unfortunatly I am not even sure you would get a film certified if you wanted to show most of his crimes. This is not a bad effort though and does try and capture some of these (I would call them animals but no animal would be this cruel) exploits!!! Not even Ray Liotta can act as vicious as Roy DeMeo.

All in all not a bad effort and worth a watch.
