This Flare release is a most welcome addition to the albums available from the legendary singer Tony Martin. It is good to hear both albums in stereo although there is a little distortion and some surface noise on some tracks. However, if you are listening through loud speakers rather than headphones you might not notice this too much. I had The Greatest Hits album when it was reissued by Contour back in the 1970s and think Tony Martin is in excellent voice. Fly Me to the Moon is an interesting mix of slightly pop orientated material and middle of the road sounds. Tony Martin excels on the title song. The 2 bonus tracks are interesting and ideally suited to his voice. Pricewise the CD is excellent value and Flare are a label to watch out for...
Dot Records not only notched up chart hits by Pat Boone, Gale Storm and The Fontane Sisters during the mid-late Fifties but thankfully discovered extra gold by reviving the waning careers of established vocalists like Eddie Fisher, Vaughn Monroe and The Mills Brothers by re-recording their old hits for stereo album release. Top of this energising list was Tony Martin (1913-2012) who recorded this pair of albums during the early Sixties and they now reach CD thanks to Flare Records.
Fortunately, Tony's romantic vocal quality was still at its finest with sympathetic orchestrations enhancing the first album's re-exploration of TO EACH HIS OWN, BEGIN THE BEGUINE, FOR EVERY MAN THERE'S A WOMAN, KISS OF FIRE and SOUTH OF THE BORDER amongst a dozen of Tony's celebrated hits which first time around enjoyed popularity during the Forties.
FLY ME TO THE MOON, recorded in 1965, allows Tony to impressively land its title number which subsequently rose to the top of the standards list during ensuing years. Generally, the album selects a more random repertoire with LA NOVIA (aka THE WEDDING) and ORIZZONTI DI GIOIA charmingly sung in Italian and Frank Loesser's upbeat I BELIEVE IN YOU (from Broadway`s satirical musical HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING) vying with oldies, FASCINATION, and I'LL BE SEEING YOU, although the latter is somewhat devalued by a heavy beat arrangement plus unnecessary heavenly choir; leaving the Marty Robbins composed country and western flavoured DON'T WORRY with its contemporaneous setting as the album's least successful choice. Two bonus songs - MAKE BELIEVE and AS TIME GOES BY add their magic to this collection.
George Greeley and Billy Vaughn mostly provide the arrangements for this delightful album combination which fifty years later seems doubly welcome as a prime recollection of Tony's unique vocal style.
