Over priced for the content

Sadly, I had already purchased the original BFI set when this additional volume was released. Its an interesting piece in that it condenses a number of James Stories into glorified Jackanory episodes. In fact the filmed episodes of which there are three were tackled by that team.
The two readers are excellent but the choice of stories is somewhat disappointing in that although they are a mixture of the well known and not so well known they dont really fit the format. The Mezzotint - presented in two versions several years apart is a classic James tale of a piece of haunted artwork and is wonderfully macabre and chilling. Wailing Well has always disappointed me and sadly Powell's reading does little to redeem it. The classic Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You My Lad looses a lot in its truncated form.
The presentation for both is that the reader is telling the story in an Edwardian parlour and works well. The contrast between the video taped installments (Robert Powell) and the filmed (the wonderful Michael Bryant narrates here) is marked and the print damage that occurs shows that once again lack of BFI budget means a less than perfect release.
That said, these are good stories (well most are) and its worth taking the plunge if you like James or that kind of story
