What a great budget release this is. Two superb live albums, dating from 1961 featuring the extraordinarily talented Oscar Peterson as first amongst equals with bass player Ray Brown and drummer, Ed Thigpen. From ballads to up tempo stormers these discs cover all the bases. There is never a sense that despite the trio format there is a lack of body, colour or drama in the music. Each player is able to swing, groove, lay back and play inspirational solos without a second thought. Hear Oscar’s opening to ‘Ill Wind’, a virtuosic tour of the piano and its capabilities, or the way the band combine on ‘Kadota’s Blues’ and believe! Best of all might just be the heart-breaking ‘In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning’, just too beautiful..
So for a modest sum- great music, good quality sound and worthwhile sleeve notes. Buy now!
