Samba Toure plays Mali blues in a very similar style to the late Ali Farka Toure. He's already had a couple of decent releases on the Riverboat/World Music Network label. Crocodile Blues with it's wonderful guest vocal by Oumou Sangare is the best of these previous releases.
And now comes his first release since things took a turn for the worse inside Mali. The result is still based in the Mali blues style with the main sounds coming from guitar, calabash, n'goni and djembe. What gives this album a different mood is the addition of washes of drone keyboards and electric guitar by Hugo Race. It doesn't dominate the music and it's not in that annoying way of really cheesy keyboards or very obtrusive electric guitar solos. This gives the sound a bit of a darker turn and probably makes it more accessible to western ears. Zoumana Tereta also appears on a few tracks playing the rasping African violin, the Sokou.
My personal taste favours his two previous releases but this is still worth a listen.

If you liked the Music of Ali Farka Toure, you will also like this Disk. The themes of this CD also take into account the CURRENT Trouble in Mali.
