Hmm, back to foam for me
on 24 April 2014
I've used a lot of different ear plugs in my time. I looked forward to trying these - I usually use foam plugs (especially the Ohropax 'Color' foam plugs which are excellent) but I wanted something which fits in the ear canal less deep - my ears were getting sore. I use ear plugs while sleeping and quite often during the day.
I like that they are designed not to fit quite as deeply as foam plugs. They are more comfortable than foam plugs. Problem is that they simply don't block out enough sound, nowhere near as much as good foam plugs fitted correctly. Each to their own in this, as I can see that others here have given these pretty good reviews. But these plugs undoubtedly do not block out anywhere near as much sound as foam plugs. I know this for a fact. I can hear things that normally I can't hear with foam plugs, same situation, same activity etc. It seems strange - the silicone is very dense, so they should be very effective. But maybe that's their inherent flaw, the silicone itself also ironically acts quite well in transferring sound from outside world to the ear drum. So while they fit really well, mold well to the ear canal, the material doesn't dampen the sound enough. It does a reasonable job, but not enough for me.
I'm fitting them correctly, so no problem there.
I want them to be good, but for me they're not. Shame.
Almost gave these plugs three stars, but the bottom line of not cutting out a lot of sound places them on a two star rating.
