the story lines are not as good as in previous series, and it is beginning to get a bit boring, all men in this series seem to be either idiots or bastards, whereas the women are wonderful but undermined by bad men and drink. It is still watchable but formulaic.

I don't know whether it's because I come from Manchester, but I think a lot of the characters lived round the corner from me! The central characters are all played unbelievably well and the intertwining of their professional and private lives is achieved with remarkable aplomb. Suranne Jones is a real 'Manc', and it shows, she has created a believable and vulnerable character. at times you have to stand back and 'let the rip-rap go off' and others you just want to be there for her. It almost gives you renewed confidence in her real-life counterparts. The role of Jill Murray is one of the triumphs of the series. As a cop carrying the responsibilities of law enforcement, man management and her own private demons, Amelia Bullmore has put her character up there with Frank Furillo, in 'Hill Street Blues'. And, for me, that is praise indeed. A thoroughly enjoyable (and underrated ?) series.

This third series is just brilliant. The format is different from previous series. I thought I had missed something when the action at the opening of episode one is not resolved until episode eight. Acting is of a high standard but I must single out Nicola Walker, an award winning performance as far as I am concerned. Hope there will be a season four.
