There are not many well recorded Velvet Underground concerts around and this is both well recorded and very well played. Some of this stuff is really special — including a dazzling, 17 minutes long version of "Sister Ray" — and some of it was released before on the famous Velvet Underground "Live 1969" album that was released in 1974. It's all equally fine. Along with "Live 1969", this is the one to get, but beware, this is the "Second Night" (blue cover), and the one NOT to get is the "First Night" (brown cover). Both look nearly alike, trouble is the "First Night" is really awfully recorded while on the other hand this one is just great.
Basically the full show from 1969, some of these tracks featured on the "Live 1969" compilation - and are pretty good quality for their age, a very acceptable listen and far superior to the 1st Night set which is for completists only - of which I count myself as one. But this is a great set. Have read some comments on the quality compared to the tracks from the previous editions from Live 1969 - vinyl and cd editions - which I also have. To be honest I have not noticed to lesser quality here. Its great to have the full show and in this quality. A great companion to The Quine Tapes.
haven't listened to my vinyl copy of 1969 for a good few years (just ordered the two cds), but this has a radically different version of sister ray (absent from 1969) that eventually explodes into life, and shorter great versions of what goes on and ocean, plus fun try-outs of sticking with you and rock and roll. on balance prefer the head-banging near instrumentals of legendary guitar amp (when, oh when, will it become generally available?), but this is great. more even than urban and ballsier than max's.
