This band has something special because they are the next best thing to Black Sabbath. When I played the disc it was like finding a long lost recording by 70s Sabbath. There have been many pretenders over the years but this band really know how to get the sound, riffs, and tunes of Sabbath of old. Original concept, maybe not ,but who cares, still a great sound and fantastic new songs from a great band ORCHID.
first purchase of these guys for me. more than pleased. As the title above says there is more than a whiff of the Sabbs (not as much as sHeavy!) but its done with a stonerish vibe to it. Nice sound, nice packaging and a free patch for all us Gumbys! Recommended to those who like their doom with plenty o' groove.
If you love Doom Metal, or just bands like Black Sabbath and Witchsorrow, you NEED this album. The solid fuzzy riffs on The Mouths Of Madness will do more than just make you feel warm and magical inside, they will get you flailing around your house before the end of the monumental opening track, "Mouths Of Madness". If your searching for something new and interesting then look no further. This album is as genuine and unique as it gets. With brilliant songs such as "Nomad" and "See You On The Other Side", The Mouths Of Madness is destined to become one of your favorites in no time. If you need further prof of this albums mastery and perfection then just listen to "Wizard Of War". If your not a dedicated fan by the end of that song then you don't deserve to possess music this good! Do yourself and every fan of Doom a favor, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
IVE BEEN A SABBATH FAN FOR YEARS NOW (BOTH OZZY & DIO) AND WHEN I SAMPLED THIS CD ON YOUTUBE I WAS GOBSMAKED...IT WAS LIKE LISTENING TO SABBATH BACK IN THE EARLY 70S...LIKE AIRBOURNE TO AC/DC IS LIKE ORCHID YO SABBATH BUT VERY MUCH IN A GOOD WAY. THIS ALBUM IS PURE CLASS...GREAT VOCALS AND GREAT DOOMY RIFF GUITARS...ACTUALLY ALL THEIR OTHER STUFF IS JUST AS GOOD.. SABBATH LIVES ON TRU ORCHID...BUT THIS BAND MORE THAN HAVE THEIR OWN IDENTITY..
I listened to this album a lot. It is very similar in style to ( you know who ) but its done so well you wont mind. The best tracks are - See you on the other side and Mountains of steel. Just accept the sound alike factor and you will enjoy it very much.
Update - Still listening to this album. This band absolutely fantastic.
There have been many bands that have passed through the Doom Metal genre and made a big impression. They are many that have become forgotten. But this isn't the case for this band.
Orchid are from San Francisco and what I like about them is that they've stayed loyal to the roots of doom metal and taken it back to where it was created. That's right - with Black Sabbath. And there was nothing more seminal than the output of Mr Osbourne, Butler, Ward and Iommi.
It is evident from the first track that the lead singer has based his vocal range on Ozzy Osbourne, but that isn't a problem. In fact what you have with this band is a retro sound that wouldn't be out of step with 1970, and that is where they've based themselves. Back in that era. Even right down to their dress-sense. And for that alone they have my profoundest respect.
Orchid is beyond just 'Doom Metal'. They also hint at 'Stoner Riffs', too, and I'm sure they'll get a great fan-base from that sector of the metal scale also.
Today's heavy metal has strayed away from what it's all about. Most rock bands don't even look like rock bands. In fact they look like short-haired male models that have just done a brief stint with ASOS. Many don't even sound like rock bands but dodge behind the shaky term of 'Nu Metal'.
Orchid are a breath of fresh air. They produce a real heavy metal sound and vehemently stand by it. I have bought their first two EPs on ITunes and their first two albums. And I have not had one single regret at any of those purchases.
I know they'll forever be linked and compared to Black Sabbath but that is a plus. Rhino Bucket had the same issue when they were compared to AC/DC, but so what? Let's be ultimately grateful that there are bands like Orchid that are carrying the standard into a new century, and may they too, spawn a myriad of emulators.
Orchid are a contemporary Doom Metal/Heavy Metal band at its very best. And I think they're all ready on their way to joining the pantheons of rockers that came before them.
This album is excellent and if you like Black Sabbath, you'll like this.
Where to begin? Orchid are the estranged children of Sabbath, they take the spirit of the Ozzy era Sabbath and make it their own. This in it's own right makes me smile for the whole duration of the album, and for the rest of the day . From start to the end of the album there is not a bad song (in my opinion). The album grooves with the swagger of the 70's, the tonal epic-ness of the instruments and ambience breathe like some deep breathing Buddhist monk. Theo's vocals are awesome, the bass is a hybrid of Geezer Butler and James Jameson, the drums are Bonham-esq and swinging not to mention the amazing riif-tastic force of the guitar (think Iommi). I highly recommend this album to all fans of Sabbath, don't be to hard on this band enjoy it for what it is Sabbath would of wrote this album themselves it is that good. Peace and go through the "hole in the sky" \m/
