Although, in my view, 'updated' opera productions don't work more often than they do, this one is totally successful. It's a worthy successor to Jonathan Miller's 'Mafia' production of several decades ago.
I've never seen a 'Rigoletto' production that brought out so brutally the cruelty and viciousness that so many of the characters display, including Rigoletto himself. Entertaining? Doubtful doubtful but involving, compelling, convincing and, certainly, an experience not to missed by any lover of Verdi.
The cast hasn't a weak link and it would be invidious to single out any one in particular. All were convincing looking and, excuse the cliche, with voices to die for.
I'm not sure it's available any more on DVD in UK, but if you haven't seen it yet and can get hold of a copy, don't hesitate.
