Sadly too many tracks appear to have been added as make weights. The outstanding tracks more than make up for this although it did bring back memories of the poor quality 'B' of yesterday. Charlie writes some great songs and interprets other material well but he needs to be more selective. His voice deserves all good tracks and so do his fans.

I like Charlie Landsborough. It's probably a childhood spent listening to my Mums Don Williams and George Hamilton IV records, but there us something about his easy listening country crooning that appeals to me.

Now, don't get me wrong, he's not breaking any barriers here, but he steers clear of the nauseating sounds perpetuated by others (who shall remain nameless), and when you factor in his own strong songwriting ability, you usually end up with an enjoyable release. And this one is no different. He's put out close to 20 albums now, and although this one leans even more heavily on the ballads, it will be a real treat for his fans, who still flock to his shows after all these years. It's the self penned material that comes across best, as befits a man who has written songs that have been covered by George Hamilton IV, Daniel O'Donnell (damn it), Jack Jones, Pat Boone and Foster & Allen. After all, no-one really needs to hear another version of 'Cold Cold Heart', 'City Of New Orleans', or ' Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain', no matter how well done they are.

So it's the likes of 'The Fool In The Mirror', 'Rivers And Streams' and 'Windin' Down' that come across best, and timed as it is to coincide with his UK tour, it will be lapped up by his always strong fan base.

Charlie's soothing singing was recommended to me by my sister. I listened to the samples on Charlie's website and was hooked immediately. I downloaded two of Charlie's albums to my smart-phone and not a day goes by without listening to the brilliantly rendered music and challenging lyrics. I can play the albums through blue-tooth to my Hi-Fi equipment.

This collection of 16 tracks, 11 self-penned and 5 made famous by others, make up a refreshingly new CD. The gentleness of his interpretation of the ballads is what we have come to expect. Then there are the more upbeat tracks that he handles effortlessly.

A VERY FINE LINE - After the gradual introduction of the musicians we have a mid-tempo ballad.

NEVER GOING BACK - A typical thought provoking ballad.

COLD COLD HEART - What a pleasant surprise his rendition of this Hank Williams classic is. Quicker tempo than expected, with a hint of The Drifting Cowboys thrown in.

RIVERS AND STREAMS - A Spanish/French feel for this love song, with a modicum of Birkenhead thrown in, as a sweetener.

FOG ON THE BRAIN - Something I suffer from a lot. A pulsating rhythmic rocker, handled to perfection.

I COULD NEVER STOP YOU LOVING ME - A love song with a somewhat reflective message.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS - This train song travels along without any major hold-ups. The gentle rhythm keeps you on the right track until the end of the journey, err I mean song, sorry.

`TIL I GAIN CONTROL AGAIN - Sung with warmth and feeling, sympathetic accompaniment.

THE FOOL IN THE MIRROR - Another fast-paced track with a solid beat.

IS THAT YOU? - Beautiful flute introduction, which the proceeds to wind itself around Charlies lyrics, giving an almost Indian feel. A haunting ballad.

STARTING AT THE BOTTOM - A slower rhythmic toe-tapper.

BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN - His friend, Willie Nelson, would be proud of this interpretation, there is no doubt. The song is sung with a warmth and sincerity, rarely found these days.

SPANISH PIPEDREAM - Sounds like a crowd pleaser, everyone is singing along in the chorus.

MORE HONEST THAN SWEET - To me this has an Irish feel about it. A gentle ballad.

WINDIN` DOWN - Another pulsating fast beat accompanies our man.

ANOTHER DREAM OF YOU - A gentle love song to close.

Whilst this is by no means an out and out Country Music Album, there are several country-style tracks in there, including those not written by Charlie. What this CD shows is that Charlies field of capability as a singer is greater than you may have thought.

The words for the tracks written by Charlie are enclosed. A very talented composer and lyricist. The backing musicians are superb, as usual. There is an intriguing piece of information, revealed by Pete Ware, who produced a large portion of this CD.

Worth waiting for and value for money.
