4.0 out of 5 starsNice printer - better than inkjet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 October 2018
I did a few calcs before buying it and the price per page is looking very good, especially when paired with replacement toner from some lesser known manufacturers. It comes with toner though, and instructions, CD's, power lead, etc, but I've got it set up wirelessly.

The wireless setup was actually much easier than equivalent printers, as some I've used in the past need you to connect to a PC first, then move to wireless, but you can do it all wirelessly from the off. The only slight downside I have is the software and drivers that come with it are a little limited, so you can perhaps print in normal or fine mode, and I did spot toner saver, but you can't (for example) set multiple photos to print on a single page, or half the page in colour, half in mono, etc. Lots of settings that I've seen in more expensive printers just aren't there, but it is actually a budget printer.

It's worth working out how many pages you'll expect to print before buying printers such as these, and I got the printer and a spare set of toners (extra from different supplier) and I expect this to last me around 6 months - not bad for what will be around 25 pounds a month, even if it gives up the ghost after that.

Print quality is good, but depends a great deal on the paper. However, on budget paper, it's quite acceptable and much better than inkjet, with no banding or noticeable artifacts in the print quality. Definitely worth it, but please have someone there to help you carry it, as it is MUCH bigger and heavier than I expected. (If this review is helpful, please give me a thumbs up, as it's nice to know I'm not just writing these for my finger exercises!)

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter having this machine for a little over a week ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 August 2017
After having this machine for a little over a week it started to squeal so loud every time a sheet of paper came out. After about a month of that god awful noise I got a hold of tech support and worked out a deal with them to have it repaired at a local shop. They had the machine for 6 weeks and I was without a printer that whole time. When I FINALLY got it back it worked properly for 2 days and then the noise was back. I immediately got back with tech support and arranged for a refurbished one to be sent to me and I would then have 5 days to send my old one back. The refurbished one is now constantly "cooling down" and won't print when it is doing this. The air vent is not blocked and it doesn't feel or smell hot. I have had the refurbished one for roughly 2 months now and it is making the same squealing noise that the first one made. I just don't think this machine is meant for the high volume printing that I do every day as our office has several of the same machines without problems.
It goes to "sleep" continually, no matter how you set it, then you have to get up and restart it. I've spent over an hour on the phone with the support trying to get it fixed. It worked ok and lasted 2 days, then back to the way it was.
dont forget, it does NOT run two sided copies, that's a big problem and always having to take way too much time to reload the paper and being ALWAYS having to worry will it print on the proper side of the paper or on top of the one I just printed and destroy everything, especially when you have very little time to spare before an important meeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Print Quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 19 November 2018

A bit of a gamble when you buy Amazon Warehouse deals. This one was misdescribed as only a cosmetic mark and a damaged box when it had actually been used to print over 200 sheets and the toners were depleted by 20-30%. The compensation given by Amazon means I'm still out of pocket on the value of the toner but too much hassle to return. Not a happy Prime member at present.

But this review is about the product itself. All the toners had been installed when it arrived (which triggered alarm bells). However, it connected to my WiFi router with no problems. Setting up the drivers on the PC generated an error message which told me to restart the PC and re-run the installation. But I didn't and it was all set up correctly anyway. Connected first time. There are some weird Brother offers to bypass on the way to registration. Instructions are not always accurate so needs a little guesswork. Actually relatively straightforward compared to some nightmare printer installations.

Then to printing. I printed a very detailed full page wildlife photo as an ultimate test. Absolutely stunning print quality given I was using particularly cheap supermarket paper and the Normal rather than Best print setting. If you use compatible toners then the price per sheet can be less than half a pence which is incredible value, a fraction of the price of other printers. If you buy genuine Brother toners a full set will cost you twice the price of the printer. The drums don't have the longest lifetime but long enough - I'll never get near the 15,000 or so prints they last but if you're in a big office and a heavy paper producer then you need to factor that in. A full set of compatibles is around £60 but genuine Brother ones will set you back twice the cost of the printer again.

I've given maximum marks for durability but this is based on what appears to be good solid build quality; no real evidence other than I've had a mono Brother laser for about 18 months and it's as good as new.

Overall I'd recommend this printer highly, but caution against the Amazon Warehouse deals if they are only marginally below the price new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous connectivity, fast accurate printing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 June 2014

Wow! This arrived today so I can't comment on the durability of it (although it is definitely chunky and feels well built), but by the end of the first half hour we had printed pictures from:
- Windows 7 machine
- Three Android devices (Sony phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung tablet running the same, and old Samsung phone running Gingerbread)
- Apple Ipad.
We have since set it up to run across the USB cable with our old XP desktop and again it's quick and simple and installed with the CD supplied.

So impressed, for the first time in ages we are all able to use the same printer without having to exchange any files across te network. The colour is good, the installation is simple (although the entering of the network password is a joke, as others have already mentioned), and when I set it to the 'fine' setting for a photograph it came out pretty impressive.

Word of note - from Ipad and Android devices, using the Brother app, we only seem to be able to print a single image to A4 - great for the kids but with no resizing options it is not the most useful thing in the world. However, there may be other apps availabe that deal with this (for the techies out there, the SDK is available so maybe someone can build us one!). On the document side though I have just printed a nine-page document from Android (phone) and it came out absolutely fine, the app gives the option to print mono only, fine/ normal quality, and also allows 2 in 1 and 4 in 1 printing (handy as it doesn't do duplex). Quite suprised to say 4 pages on 1 is quite easy to read - this will save us a stack of paper.

All in all I love this machine. I know it's early days but so far it couldn't have delivered better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value laser printer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 1 October 2015

Excellent price and super fast delivery from Printerland, delivered in under 24 hours by DPD. This replaces an A4 colour Konica Minolta laser I've had for several years, that has now become troublesome. The Brother seems well designed and was easy to set up. I use a Mac and the printer drivers on the supplied CD are not very up-to-date, but it was easy to find the current ones on Brother.co.uk, the drivers auto match to the OS version you are using, once you have selected your printer model HL-3140CW. Wifi was easy to set up. I found using a USB cable to my main computer caused a bit of confusion while setting up with the printer drivers, as there are two versions of the drivers, one for USB and one for wireless (Airplay), the USB driver seemed to be selected as the default, so had to delete it and add the airplay version instead. Other Macs on the network installed the correct Airplay driver version first time. I had my previous laser printer for ten years, so I hope this proves as long-lasting, although it cost a quarter of the price of the Konica Minolta, it seems very well engineered.

My previous laser printer was on a wired network, but as all the Macs at home are linked back to my wireless hub by ethernet and the hub sits right next to the printer, connectivity is just as good. Plus the bonus that I can print directly from my iPhone and iPad.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD PRINTER BUT CHANGING CARTRIDGES IS A NIGHTMARE

Very good till we came to change the cartridges after almost 4 years of home use. Absolute nightmare! Finally managed to change all cartridges and printer is once again working well. So in conclusion I would recommend it but be prepared for difficulties when it's time to change the cartridges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value colour laser - say goodbye to dried up inkjets, but be aware of the limits of lasers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 9 April 2016

I'm not a high volume printer, but I need the darn thing to work when I have a print job. I got fed up of cheap, and expensive inkjets that just dry up if you don't print for a while.
So I saw this model of a laser printer and I have to say I've very pleased with it. Just a few things to remember:

- Laser printers (all of them...not just this one) are not intended for photos. This is not a problem for me, but if you absolutely need photo quality then you're better off with an inkjet. Lasers will print color photos and diagrams pretty well, but not great.

- The printer is pretty big, and very heavy compared to an inkjet. Make sure you have desk space available.

- Laser printers do not have a scanner built in, they are just a printer. I have three or four "dried up" inkjets that I could use as scanners though - that means more desk space used up.

- Don't bother buying the Brother refills, or even the "compatibles". Check out this video on how to save a fortune on toner. [...]

So in summary. Great quality, fast, never "dries up", solid build. I'm very pleased. But be aware of the limitations I listed above that apply to all laser printers - not just this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant so far!

Got fed up with Epson Injet problems so decided to try "Lazer" for a change. It took just 5 days to arrive and came with a UK 3 pin plug and an Irish warranty leaflet. Out of the box I could not get it to work wirelessly using WPS but that might be the router although it worked fine with another item recently. So I used the CD supplied and set in up manually and it was off straight away. Its connected with two PC's and an Ipad with no problems at all.Very impressed with the printer quality. I use mainly black and occasional colour and do not print photos so for what I do the quality is fine. Its quiet in operation and it runs on for a few minutes after its printed but it is quite exceptable noise level just 3 feet away from me. I note that the toner is quite expensive but compatibles are available more cheaply and I shall try these once its out of warranty. That was the only swizz; the warranty leaflet said two years but when I registered on line with Brother it only gave 12 months warranty. I took it it up with them by email and they replied within 24 hours saying that its 2 years in the EU but only 12 months in the UK!! Brilliant value for money at less that £90

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy this printer, your life WILL be better!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 9 December 2015

I have spent my whole life buying - and regretting buying - colour inkjet printers. Paper failing to feed properly, inconsistent colours, cartridges which run out after a couple of weeks, and often ending in complete failure.

I'd never really looked at colour laser printers, assuming they were too expensive - so when I noticed this Brother printer for £129, I thought it would be too good to be true! I have to say it is the best printer purchase I've ever made (in about 20 years of purchasing home office printers for heavy use). The printer is exceptionally reliable, never has paper feed issues and the print quality is fantastic - looks the quality of a professional printing job. I bought the printer nine months ago and have only just had to replace my first toner cartridge (the black one) - and estimate I've printed around 3,000 pages in that time.

I print from both my laptop and my iPhone without issue - the wifi printing is very useful.

The only slight niggle was (like other reviews) supplied with the wrong plug. I had a spare kettle lead so used this rather than send it back.

This is one of those rare purchases that has genuinely improved my life by a significant amount! I really recommend buying this - your life will be better!

5.0 out of 5 stars He ain't heavy, he's my Brother! :)

Overall this is a very capable and relatively inexpensive laser printer. Set up was really straight forward on my macs, and not especially difficult on the PC either so that was a good start. Basically I just ignored all the instruction manuals and the CD (Yes, I am male!) and added it to my wifi network using the simple screen on the printer itself. Once it was connected to wifi, I just let my devices find it (and for the PC got the drivers from the CD), so I was up and running pretty quickly.

Print quality seems pretty good, although it should be noted I don't print anything of photographic quality so can't really comment beyond fairly generic printing standards, but the characters are crisp and contrasts good enough for anything I need. Speed is also very good for general printing so nothing to worry about there either.

It's worth noting though that the device only ships with "trial size" toner cartridges (as do most printers) which are only good for about 250 sheets of general printing, so you'll need to either get a spare set of cartridges at the same time... or expect to have to buy some pretty early on.

All in all, a pretty good printer that does a fair job for a fair price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality piece of kit..... make sure you read the good not just the bad

There are a lot of mixed reviews on here but all you want to hear is 'is it a good printer?'
Yes it is - and at less than £100 for a laser (well LED) it is fantastic value.
I think a lot of the poorer marks come from people who had difficulty setting it up for wireless operation.
So a quick precis: Took it out of the box, took all the sticky tapes off - removed the cartridges and took their safety plastic bits off.
Put them back and turned it on.
'setup wizard' showed on the screen, I pressed ok and it searched for the wireless router.
It found it and asked for the password (found on the back of the router) A bit of 'up -down' with the keys and it was in and connected.
Put DVD in and installed the wireless drivers. It now shows in 'printers' on windows (no trouble at all)

Printed a few pages, it was fast and excellent print quality. Printed a photo and it wasn't so good until I realised I was in standard print mode.
Changed this to high quality and a great photo came out.
If you want to use card or glossy photo paper, there is a front and back flap to pull down. This then goes through the printer without bending at all.
The paper carrier is excellent taking 250 pages - pull it out put a ream in there and close the lid.
A very compact extremely high quality text printer and photos are of a high enough quality to frame.
And when I say high enough - you have to look really close to see 'sometimes' slight banding of the black colours.
I highly recommend this printer - you will be delighted with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, sturdy printer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 23 February 2014

I ordered this printer late one afternoon and it arrived the following lunchtime. 100% to Printerland -- and that was free delivery. Make no mistake, this printer is heavy and I had to "walk" it up the stairs to my study. I hope the sturdy construction is reflected in a long life. Unpacking and physical assembly was easy and a standard UK mains lead was included.

Setting it up to use my wireless network on Windows XP was very straightforward, following the instructions, although the CD made strange noises in the drive. Getting it to work on my Linux computer involved downloading the driver from the Brother website and installing it manually, and I had a problem finding the IP address of the printer. Eventually I found that once set up, the printer would print a network configuration sheet using the menu. With this information it was soon configured properly on Arch Linux.

It is not a photo printer but so far I have had very good colour and black-and-white printing of documents from both operating systems. I am glad to say good-bye to clogged nozzles and other ink-jet horrors. The Brother replacement toners look expensive but I shall try compatible toners when the time comes to refill.
