How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsNice printer - better than inkjet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 October 2018
I did a few calcs before buying it and the price per page is looking very good, especially when paired with replacement toner from some lesser known manufacturers. It comes with toner though, and instructions, CD's, power lead, etc, but I've got it set up wirelessly.

The wireless setup was actually much easier than equivalent printers, as some I've used in the past need you to connect to a PC first, then move to wireless, but you can do it all wirelessly from the off. The only slight downside I have is the software and drivers that come with it are a little limited, so you can perhaps print in normal or fine mode, and I did spot toner saver, but you can't (for example) set multiple photos to print on a single page, or half the page in colour, half in mono, etc. Lots of settings that I've seen in more expensive printers just aren't there, but it is actually a budget printer.

It's worth working out how many pages you'll expect to print before buying printers such as these, and I got the printer and a spare set of toners (extra from different supplier) and I expect this to last me around 6 months - not bad for what will be around 25 pounds a month, even if it gives up the ghost after that.

Print quality is good, but depends a great deal on the paper. However, on budget paper, it's quite acceptable and much better than inkjet, with no banding or noticeable artifacts in the print quality. Definitely worth it, but please have someone there to help you carry it, as it is MUCH bigger and heavier than I expected. (If this review is helpful, please give me a thumbs up, as it's nice to know I'm not just writing these for my finger exercises!)

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter having this machine for a little over a week ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 August 2017
After having this machine for a little over a week it started to squeal so loud every time a sheet of paper came out. After about a month of that god awful noise I got a hold of tech support and worked out a deal with them to have it repaired at a local shop. They had the machine for 6 weeks and I was without a printer that whole time. When I FINALLY got it back it worked properly for 2 days and then the noise was back. I immediately got back with tech support and arranged for a refurbished one to be sent to me and I would then have 5 days to send my old one back. The refurbished one is now constantly "cooling down" and won't print when it is doing this. The air vent is not blocked and it doesn't feel or smell hot. I have had the refurbished one for roughly 2 months now and it is making the same squealing noise that the first one made. I just don't think this machine is meant for the high volume printing that I do every day as our office has several of the same machines without problems.
It goes to "sleep" continually, no matter how you set it, then you have to get up and restart it. I've spent over an hour on the phone with the support trying to get it fixed. It worked ok and lasted 2 days, then back to the way it was.
dont forget, it does NOT run two sided copies, that's a big problem and always having to take way too much time to reload the paper and being ALWAYS having to worry will it print on the proper side of the paper or on top of the one I just printed and destroy everything, especially when you have very little time to spare before an important meeting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and easy to setup but poor colours.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 5 November 2015

I bought this a week ago as a little home office printer. It's cheap and pretty easy to setup, delivery was fast but the colours are really poor.

I had to download the drivers from the Brother site as I don't have a CD drive on my laptop but it was all straight forward.

If you install the proper drivers you can control the print colours a bit more. The best result you can get is setting the colours to "vivid" and the quality to "fine" in the print dialogue but it's not great. Especially the yellow which looks more like a mustard colour at 100% Y. The magenta is quite purply rather than a clear bright cerise pink and the cyan is dull.

The black is ok but our company branding is pretty bright and this just isn't up to the job. I've since read that this is a common issue with Brother laser printers and toners. I'm not expecting a laser printer at this level to produce vivid hues like an inkjet or an HP Indigo press or anything, but if you want to do anything with a bit of punch I'd leave this printer alone.

With hindsight I'd have spent a bit more and got an OKI. The toners are more expensive but you get what you pay for. Lesson learned :(

I already have a b/w laser printer from another company so I have some prior experience with laser printers a Samsung that is 5 years old and very good..I bought this to supplement an colour ink jet printer for cost effective productivity.
Indeed as stated by others this is heavy and large also unreasonable loud. The print quality is not very good for colour pictures looking washed out and dull.. There is no option to select "photo " or "glossy paper in the print options but I have tried the card feed print option (hand feed one at a time).
Even worse the hand full of test prints I have produced has depleted the reserve beyond expectations.
I have given up trying to set up the WiFi after 2 hours trying it really is crap.
I have no complaints regarding delivery and the packaging was excellent.
Perhaps I should have spent a little more for a a better model/make I really am disappointed with this and can't recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not print labels well
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 9 May 2019

The manual feed is a pain, it has not got enough support and so you literally have to stand there holding the bit of paper. Lack of suitable guides on this feed, and indeed the tray feed make printing labels or accurate prints very hit and miss. There is no calibration other than for colours. The wireless capability works well, great for printing directly from a phone. It is noisy but prints fast. Print quality is good, mostly, but occasionally leaves smears or under prints on metallic labels especially. Have spoken to Brother support about the sub par label printing, their response was indifferent at best. For this reason alone I would look at another supplier and am tempted to return this unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor choice, best avoided

This is hideously complicated and won't, I have concluded, work with a Mac. It weighs a ton too. Very disappointing from Brother.

Update: I contacted the Brother UK helpline who weren't able to resolve the problems. On neither PC or Mac would this print and the Firmware was infuriating - creating a print job then stating it couldn't proceed because the printer was busy. If only! In an era of plug and play, or at least download the driver and play, this seems very dated.

From the test sheet print generated by the machine itself, I can see that the colours are vivid and printing is sharp.

I have returned it (£28 postage) and now await my refund including the cost of doing so. What a disappointment.

Really disappointed here. I bought this based on the reviews on Amazon but I've had problems in two areas:

1. It's stopped printing anything in colour correctly. It just makes a complete mess of the colours when printing pictures. The problem is I'm not using the manufacturer's toners so can't make a case to them. You'll probably say "Well, it's the toners" but they come from the same manufacturer that I've used for years for a variety of printers and I don't think it's that, because if it's printing text it will print any colour I choose. If it's a picture it makes a complete cock of it. I've tried all the calibration and reset tweaks that I could find and it's done nothing.

2. For some inexplicable reason, if you're doing a few print jobs the bloody thing just stops working between jobs then 20 minutes later decides it will play. What is it doing? Having a lunch break? I'm sitting there like a spare prick at a wedding and the printer decides to have a rest for 20 minutes.

First sample of the printer had very poor quality, with excessive quantities of blue.
I had greens coming out as almost blue and even blue snow.
Replacement is better.
I'm currently trying to arrange the return of the original printer, but the retailer (Printerland) insist I take a day off work and wait at home all day for it to be collected by TNT, rather than offering a defined collection time or allowing me to drop it off at the TNT depot.

2.0 out of 5 stars ... a brother black laser printer before and it works amazing hence brother again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 February 2015

I had a brother black laser printer before and it works amazing hence brother again. but disappointed with this one, thought newer version should be better, but no! when print black labels, the ink seems to be skiing on the paper, it goes everywhere, although it comes out ok if you print again although you still have some black dots at some places. Also the colour print is awful, it is a lot worse quality than my 30 pound Epson I got from years ago, so can't recommend this...

Print quality is average at best. Cannot cope with photo paper due to the way it needs to be loaded upside-down, it always drags a second piece of paper in with it and causes a jam.
